Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate standout men's golfer and A-Sun All-Conference selection Ryan Cornfield has extended his strong playing year into the summer by winning the prestigious Berkshire Trophy at the Berkshire Golf Club over the weekend.
Cornfield, a rising junior from Dudley, England, was one of 130 entrants into the prestigious Berkshire Trophy, one of the major amateur events conducted by the Royal and Ancient Club of St. Andrews (R&A) in Great Britain. Past champions include multiple major winner Nick Faldo and all-time great Peter Oosterhuis, as well as current PGA Tour member Ross Fisher and European tour members John Bickerton, Andrew Marshall, Eddie Pepperrell and Van Phillips.
The Berkshire Trophy is a 72-hole tournament with players playing a round on each of the Blue and Red Courses in the first two rounds. The players in the Top 40 advanced to the final two rounds, both played this past Sunday on the Red Course at the Berkshire Golf Club. Cornfield, playing out of the Enville Club, opened the tournament with a 1-over-par 72 on the Blue Course and shot 1-under 71 on the Red Course to make the cut at even-par.
Cornfield saved his best golf for the final day. He shot a 2-under 70 in the third round of the tournament and first round of the day to move into a tie atop the leaderboard heading into the final round. He was simply magnificent in the final round, finishing with four birdies on the back nine and shooting 5-under on holes 9-15 to shoot 67. He won the tournament by a stroke over David Corben with a 7-under 280 total.
Cornfield led Upstate to a widely successful season in 2013-14. The Spartans won three team tournament championships for the first time in school history with Cornfield helping lead the way. He claimed two second-place efforts, both helping lead the Spartans to team championships at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate and the Rutgers Invitational. He received A-Sun Player of the Week accolades after both efforts. He also finished third at the Bash of the Beach, also helping lead the team to the tournament title.
Cornfield posted 11 rounds under-par for the season, turning in the team's lowest round of the year with a 67 in the second round of the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate in September. He shot six rounds in the 60's. He owns a 595-186 head-to-head record for the season for a team-best .811 winning percentage. He became the first Upstate men's golfer to earn all-conference honors since 2010, claiming second team honors.
