
White, Hassell Set to Begin South Carolina Amateur Championship

Spartanburg, S.C. – After turning in solid qualifying rounds at Three Pines Country Club, USC Upstate golfers Taylor White and Sean Hassell will begin play in the 83rd Annual Men's South Carolina Amateur Championship Thursday at the Reserve Golf Club on Pawley's Island.
White qualified for the South Carolina Amateur after firing a three-under-par 69 at Three Pines during the qualifying tournament on July 2. Hassell also qualified at the site, shooting a 73. They are two of 28 players who qualified from the site. In addition to White and Hassell, former standout Matthew Hopper also qualified for the Amateur at Three Pines, shooting a 74.
The Reserve Golf Club will host 126 golfers attempting to win the state's most prestigious amateur golf tournament. The players will play 18 holes each day of the tournament with a 36-hole cut after Friday's round. The tournament will conclude with rounds on Saturday and Sunday for those players who make the cut after Friday's second round.
White will begin his pursuit of the Amateur title teeing off on hole #10 at 1:10 p.m. Thursday. He will begin his second round on hole #1 at 8:10 a.m. Friday. He will be paired with Lexington's Jonathan Ryan and Laurens' Neal Todd in the first two rounds. Hassell will open the tournament on hole #10 at 7:40 a.m. on Thursday and will begin the second round on Friday at 12:40 p.m. on hole #1. He will be paired with Mount Pleasant's Daniel Gregory and Fort Mill's Charlie Niland in the first two rounds.
White turned in a strong freshman season for Upstate in 2013-14. He was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team after finishing the year with three Top 10 individual finishes, including a second-place effort to help the Spartans win the Bash at the Beach team championship. He broke Upstate's all-time freshman stroke average record, recording a 73.8 average to top all-time great Josh Gallman's previous mark of 74.6 in 2006-07.
Hassell played in four tournaments for Upstate in 2013-14 and posted the lowest stroke average of his career. He totaled a 75.9 average while taking home a Top 5 individual finish on the year.
