Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team will open the 2014-15 season when it travels to Daufuskie Island, S.C., to play in the Rees Jones Invitational. The tournament is being played Sunday-Tuesday.

The Spartans won three team tournament championships, had three A-Sun Player of the Week selections, peaked at No. 81 in the Golfstat rankings in the middle of the season and finished with a program-best ranking of No. 105.
With six returning players a two talented newcomers, Upstate will look to build on last year's success and start a foundation for the season this week at the Rees Jones. Upstate is one of 11 teams in the tournament which includes A-Sun rival and NCAA Regional participant Kennesaw State. Joining the Spartans and the Owls in the tournament are Bowling Green State, Campbell, Charleston Southern, East Carolina, Elon, Presbyterian, Towson, UNC Wilmington and Winthrop. Kennesaw State (44), East Carolina (81) and Winthrop (90) all finished in the Top 100 in the nation last year with Upstate (105) and Charleston Southern (107) just missing the top-100.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Ryan Cornfield, Taylor White, Sebastian Lopez Bulla, Sean Hassell and Trey Taylor into action to open the season. Cornfield, White and Lopez Bulla each played in all 10 tournaments for the Spartans in 2013-14. Cornfield led the Spartans with a 73.0 stroke average and three top-5 finishes, including back-to-back second place efforts in leading Upstate to the team championships at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate and Rutgers Invitational en route to earning back-to-back A-Sun Player of the Week honors. He went on to earn A-Sun All-Conference honors. White finished second in leading the Spartans to the title at the Bash of the Beach and was an A-Sun All-Freshman selection with a 73.8 stroke average.
