Spartans Finish 8th, Cornfield 9th at Rees Jones Invitational

Daufuskie Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team shot a final round 313 Tuesday to finish tied for eighth at the Rees Jones Invitational played on the Haig Point Golf Course on Daufuskie Island. Spartan Ryan Cornfield turned in a solid outing in the first tournament of the year with a tie for ninth on the individual leaderboard.
Players had to battle cool temperatures and a constant threat of rain during the final round, leading to teams posting higher scores than they had in the previous two rounds Sunday and Monday. Eight of the 11 teams posted their highest round of the tournament in the final round.
In a seesaw battle, Kennesaw State claimed the team championship after shooting a 293 on Tuesday and finishing with an 871 tournament total. The Owls won by three strokes over East Carolina (874), which owned the overnight lead by two strokes over the Owls. Winthrop finished third with an 887 total and was followed by Charleston Southern (897), UNC Wilmington (907), Campbell (907), Presbyterian (919), Upstate (924), Elon (924), Towson (927) and Bowling Green State (937). Winthrop's Zach Seabolt shot a final round 69 to win the individual title with a 208 total.
Upstate counted scores of 75 from Taylor White (pictured), 77 from Cornfield, 79 from Sebastian Lopez Bulla and 82 from Sean Hassell in the final round. Trey Taylor carded an 85.
Cornfield went out in 2-over 38 and made par on his final five holes to record his 77. He secured a top-10 finish by tying for ninth place with a 222 total. It was the seventh top-10 finish of his career. White was the low Spartan on the day. After standing 3-over after eight holes, he played his final 10 holes even-par to finish at 75. He claimed a tie for 30th with a 230 total.
Lopez Bulla converted three birdies in his round which helped him battle through and finish in the 70's. He was the second-best Spartan in the tournament, finishing in a tie for 29th with a 229 total. Hassell also penciled in a birdie during his round. In all, Upstate made nine birdies on the day and finished the season-opening tournament with 35 in three rounds.
