Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's golf team will make the trip to Madison, Wisc., to play in the Badger Invitational for the second consecutive year as the Spartans play their second tournament of the season Sept. 28-30.
Wisconsin hosts the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course, ranked No. 3 in the nation among college golf courses. The course plays at 7,259 yards and is a par-72 layout. The teams will play 54 holes with 18 holes played each day, Sunday-Tuesday. Upstate fared well in last year's tournament, finishing fourth behind South Carolina, Kansas and Illinois. The Spartans would have finished second to South Carolina except for a scorecard miscue which negated a 70 turned in by Ryan Cornfield in the second round. Had his round counted, the Spartans would have picked up seven shots and finished one shot ahead of Kansas in second.
Upstate is one of 14 teams vying for the championship at the Badger Invitational. Joining the Spartans and the host Badgers are Bowling Green State, Bradley, Charleston Southern, Drake, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Marquette, Rutgers, Sam Houston State and Toledo. Iowa State finished the 2013-14 season ranked No. 48 in the Golfstat ranking and the tournament field consists of eight teams ranked in the Top 150 in the nation last season.
Upstate head coach Todd Lawton will send the lineup of Cornfield, Sebastian Lopez Bulla, Taylor White, Trey Taylor and Sean Hassell into action this week. The lineup is the same five that opened the season at the Rees Jones Invitational and averaged 308.0 per round in the tournament en route to finishing tied for eighth. Cornfield led the team with a tie for ninth. Taylor shot his career-best round in the event, while Lopez Bulla and White each claimed Top 30 individual finishes.
