
Evansville Uses Big Inning to Defeat Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Evansville Purple Aces used a three-run seventh inning to defeat the USC Upstate baseball team 5-2 at Harley Park on Friday afternoon.
Evansville improves to 1-3 on the season while Upstate drops to 3-2.
Cody Brittain led Upstate at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles. Charlie Carpenter went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and an RBI. Daniel Fickas was 2-for-4 with a single, triple and run scored. Zach Krider finished 1-for-4 with a single and run scored.
Trey Hair led Evansville at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a single, double and two RBI. Eric McKibban was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Boomer Synek, Shain Showers and Korbin Williams each had a hit.
After Evansville stranded a pair of runners in the top of the first, the Spartans took advantage of a two out walk to Krider as Carpenter brought him home on a double to right field for the game's first run. Upstate had runners in scoring position with two outs in the second and fourth innings but couldn't push a run across.
Evansville got on the board in the sixth inning as Synek reached on a two out single, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Hair double.
The Purple Aces began the seventh inning with a runner on as a result of an Upstate error. McKibban brought home the tying run with a double. After a strikeout, Jonathan Ramon reached on a walk before a groundout gave the visitors runners in scoring positon with two outs. Jyawook brought home the go-ahead run before a bases-loaded walk gave Evansville an additional run.
Fickas led off the Upstate seventh on a triple and would score as a result of an Evansville error. Fickas was hit by a pitch to begin the ninth inning and advanced to second on a Carpenter base hit with one out. Following a strikeout, the Spartan runners advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch before a strikeout ended the game.
Brent Jurceka earned the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Blake Whitney took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, with two walks and six strikeouts in 6.2 innings.
Upstate returns to action on Saturday, hosting Monmouth at 4 p.m.
