Howey in the Hills, Fla. – Ryan Cornfield recorded his eighth career top-five finish Sunday after tying for second place to conclude play at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular from the par-71, 6,966-yard Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
Upstate closed out the two-day tournament in sixth place, tying its season-best finish tallied twice this year at the Badger Invitational (Sept. 27-29, 2015) and Camden Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 24-25, 2015). The Spartans posted a final round 296 for a three-round 886 (296-294-296).
Cornfield last posted a top-five performance last season when he tied for first at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic after shooting a 6-under 210. This weekend, the senior carded a 4-under 212 capped off by a season-low round of 69 on Sunday. Cornfield wrapped up the weekend with rounds of 71, 72 and 69.
"I am so proud of what Ryan accomplished this week," said head coach Todd Lawton. "He remained focused over every shot despite starting his second round poorly. He made plenty of birdies and finished his last three holes eagle, birdie and par to move up the leaderboard. He is looking forward to tomorrow and another great tournament."
Sebastian Lopez Bulla had the second-highest individual showing for the Spartans after placing in a tie for 26th at 223 (74-73-76), followed by Taylor White a few spots behind in a tie for 31st. White turned in his lowest round of the weekend Sunday with a 72 and compiled a total score of 224 (78-74-72). Andrew Purcell was 61st individually at 234 (77-75-82), and Matt Carter fired his lowest round of the tournament with a 79 to finish tied for 71st position with a 238 (74-85-79).
Playing as an individual, Trey Taylor tied for 88th with his final score of 244 (81-79-84).
South Florida won the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular team championship with a three-round 849. USF's Chase Koepka held off teammate Rigel Fernandes and Cornfield by five strokes to win individual medalist honors at 9-under 207.
