Greenville, S.C. – Ryan Cornfield earned his first career outright individual medalist honors as the senior carded a final round 69 on Sunday to win the Furman Intercollegiate after tying the tournament scoring record at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Cornfield shot a final round 69 to tie the tournament record with a three-round 203 (-13). He won the Furman Intercollegiate by three strokes over Wofford's Andrew Novak for his second career victory and first in outright fashion. Cornfield tied for individual medalist accolades at the 2014 Wendy's Kiawah Classic. Today also marked the third time in the last six rounds in which Cornfield has posted a round of 69 or better.
"This tournament is one of the longest running and most prestigious in the country," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "Our team effort was the best I have seen in a long time and our finish today after a rough start was simply incredible."
Cornfield began his day almost in similar fashion as the second round by recording birdies on three of his first six holes. After struggling on holes 11-18 with three bogeys, he ended the tournament with back-to-back birdies on the second and third to win the tournament by three strokes. Cornfield finished the three-day event leading in par 4 scoring at 7-under and a 3.77 stroke average, and was first with 18 birdies over 54 holes.
"To win with a lead is always special and extremely difficult," added Lawton. "Ryan slept on a great round, came out today, and did what I thought was even better considering the pressure. Records fell today and that is a good thing."
"I trusted my own abilities this tournament and stayed patient enough to win," said Cornfield. "It is a great honor to win the Furman Intercollegiate and tie the tournament individual record."
Taylor White turned in his second round of 70 on Sunday and finished tied for 21st place at even-par 216 (70-76-70). Sebastian Lopez Bulla was the third-highest finisher for the Spartans following his third round 73 to place in a tie for 49th with a score of 220 (75-72-73). Tom Schofield and Trey Taylor both tied for 71st with a three-day 224 as Schofield carded a 75 and Taylor 79.
Playing as an individual, Alejandro Lopez wrapped up his play at the Furman Intercollegiate with a final round 81 to finish at 243 (84-78-81) for the weekend.
Upstate posted its best team finish of the season by concluding the tournament in third place with a combined score of 7-under 857, moving up two spots from Saturday. The finish is the highest for the Spartans since placing third at the 2014 Badger Invitational.
Georgia State captured the Furman Intercollegiate team championship with a team score of 23-under 841.
The Spartans are back in action April 11-12 at the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational in Spartanburg.
