Braselton, Ga. – Ryan Cornfield opened the 2016 A-Sun Men's Golf Championships with a 71 Sunday afternoon and is tied for sixth place heading into the second round. He led the USC Upstate men's golf team to a 301 score, good for sixth place with two rounds left to play at the par-72, 7,032-yard Legends Course at Chateau Elan.
As a team, Upstate is seven strokes back of Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville, who are tied for fourth place at 294. Kennesaw State holds the day one lead in the team standings with a 5-under 283 and is ahead of second place Lipscomb by six strokes.
Kennesaw State's Wyatt Larkin sits atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday.
Cornfield finished the day at 1-under 71 and is tied for sixth with five other players. The senior scored par on each of his opening nine holes and made the turn at even-par 36. Cornfield would birdie the 14th and 16th holes to sit at 2-under, but carded a bogey to close out his round with a 71. He enters second round action two strokes back of Larkin.
"I am pleased with Ryan's performance today and I know he is excited about the next two rounds," said head coach Todd Lawton. "Our team score tells a story of missed chances and a poor finish. We have players that have performed well recently and it is good to count on that experience for tomorrow. We just need to get after it and execute."
Sebastian Lopez Bulla had an opening day 74, highlighted by two birdies, and is tied for 16th place at 2-over par. Taylor White and Trey Taylor both turned in first round scores of 78 and are tied for 26th position. Taylor posted four birdies on the day while White added two. Tom Schofield rounds out the first day for the Spartans in 34th place with his score of 84 after registering one birdie.
The second round of the A-Sun Men's Golf Championships will tee off Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.
