Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head women's basketball coach Tammy George has announced that the Spartans will compete in 29 games for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign including 15 inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
George, entering her 14th year overall and 12th at Upstate, has assembled a schedule that includes six teams who competed in postseason tournaments a year ago. UNC Asheville, Jacksonville, Purdue and West Virginia qualified for the NCAA Tournament while FGCU was the WNIT runner-up. Stetson advanced to the second round of the WBI Tournament. Overall, the Spartans have scheduled 15 non-conference games and 14 ASUN games.
"I'm looking forward to the season and coaching this group of ladies," George said. "We are excited with the non-conference schedule. It is a tough schedule that will help prepare us for ASUN Conference play."
Upstate opens the season on November 11 against Converse inside the Hodge Center before a three-game road trip at Presbyterian College (Nov. 14), Purdue (Nov. 17) and Illinois (Nov. 20). The Spartans will spend Thanksgiving week at the Hodge Center as they host William and Mary (Nov. 22) and Warren Wilson (Nov. 23) on consecutive nights before a visit from Gardner-Webb (Nov. 26), and closing out the month at Furman (Nov. 30).
The Spartans open December with a visit from Bob Jones (Dec. 3) followed by road games against West Virginia (Dec. 10) and South Carolina State (Dec. 12). Home games versus Campbell (Dec. 15), UNC Asheville (Dec. 17) and Maryland Eastern Shore (Dec. 30) closes out the month. A road contest at N.C. Central (Jan. 3) wraps up non-conference action.
ASUN play begins with three consecutive home games against NJIT (Jan. 7), Jacksonville (Jan. 14) and North Florida (Jan. 16) followed by road games against Stetson (Jan. 21) and FGCU (Jan. 23). A home contest with Kennesaw State (Jan. 28) closes out the month.
Upstate will spend the majority of February on the road as the Spartans travel to Lipscomb (Feb. 2), Kennesaw State (Feb. 4), North Florida (Feb. 11), Jacksonville (Feb. 13) and NJIT (Feb. 25). The final three home contests will be against Lipscomb (Feb. 8), FGCU (Feb. 17) and Stetson (Feb. 20).
The ASUN Tournament is scheduled for March 3-12 and will take place on the home court of the higher seeds.
The Spartans went 22-12 overall last season and advanced to the semifinals of the WBI Tournament. In league play, Upstate went 10-4 to finish in third place.
