Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head women's basketball coach Tammy George has announced the 29 game schedule that the Spartans will compete in during the 2017-18 campaign. The schedule includes 16 games inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
Of Upstate's 22 opponents, seven qualified for the postseason in 2016-17. Florida Gulf Coast and UNC Asheville represented the ASUN and Big South Conferences, respectively, in the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Jacksonville, Stetson, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech saw postseason action in the WNIT while Campbell participated in the WBI. Overall, the Spartans have scheduled 15 non-conference games and 14 ASUN games.
"I am pleased with our non-conference opponents," George said. "We are continuing with some regional opponents and have added some new ones as well. We start on the road against a tough opponent and will be tested early. We have to come ready to play every time we step on the floor."
Upstate opens the season with three of its first four games on the road beginning with the season opener on November 10 at East Carolina. Following the home opener on November 15 against Presbyterian College, the Spartans will travel to Virginia Tech (Nov. 17) and Campbell (Nov. 19). The Spartans will spend Thanksgiving week at the Hodge Center as they host Converse (Nov. 21) and Omaha (Nov. 24). Upstate will conclude the month against a pair of regional foes, traveling to Gardner-Webb (Nov. 28) before hosting Bob Jones (Nov. 30).
The Spartans will play four of six December games inside the Hodge Center beginning with a visit from Furman on Dec. 3. Following a trip to William & Mary, Upstate will host South Carolina State (Dec. 9) and UNC Asheville (Dec. 16) on consecutive Saturdays. A trip to Oklahoma State (Dec. 19) and a home contest against N.C. Central (Dec. 30) conclude the 2017 slate with the non-conference schedule concluding with a trip from Brevard (Jan. 2). George directed the Tornados for two seasons before arriving at Upstate prior to the 2005-06 season.
ASUN play begins with three consecutive road games against NJIT (Jan. 6), Stetson (Jan. 13) and Florida Gulf Coast (Jan. 15) before three straight home conference matchups against North Florida (Jan. 20), Jacksonville (Jan. 22) and Kennesaw State (Jan. 27).
Upstate opens February with a two-game road trip against Lipscomb (Feb. 1) and Kennesaw State (Feb. 3). The Spartans face Lipscomb for the second time in a week (Feb. 7) before hosting Florida Gulf Coast in the annual Homecoming game. A visit from Stetson (Feb. 12) wraps up a three-game homestand. Upstate will spend President's Day weekend in the River City as they face Jacksonville (Feb. 17) and North Florida (Feb. 19) before hosting the regular season finale against NJIT (Feb. 24).
The ASUN Tournament is scheduled for March 2-11 and will take place on the home court of the higher seeds.
The Spartans went 9-21 overall last season and 2-12 in conference play.
