
Thorpe Leads Upstate in Loss at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. – Tamera Thorpe scored a season-high 22 points but it wasn't enough to hold off a second half charge by Virginia Tech as the Hokies defeated USC Upstate 87-56 on Friday night inside Cassell Coliseum.
Virginia Tech improves to 3-0 while Upstate drops to 0-3.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
- Thorpe's game-high 22-point output was the most by a Spartan this season and is five points shy of tying her career-high.
- Anda Kuzmina and Morgan Williams posted new career-highs with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
- Virginia Tech had five players finish in double figures, led by Alexis Jean with 19 points.
- Upstate shot 37.0 percent from the field while Virginia Tech shot 43.9 percent from the field.
- Virginia Tech outrebounded Upstate 51-25.
- The Hokies scored 27 points off of 23 Upstate turnovers while Upstate scored 16 points off of 21 Hokie miscues.
- Upstate's bench outscored the Virginia Tech reserves 26-21.
- The game featured five ties and five lead changes.
FIRST QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Kuzmina scored Upstate's first five points.
- Regan Magarity tied the game at 7 thanks to her layup at the 5:56 mark.
- Upstate answered with a 6-0 run to lead 13-7 after a Diamon Shiflet layup with 4:07 to go in the period.
- Thorpe's layup with just under two minutes remaining gave Upstate a 19-10 edge as the Spartans led 19-12 after the opening frame.
- Upstate shot 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) from the field in the opening 10 minutes while Virginia Tech was 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) during the same stretch.
SECOND QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Williams pushed the Upstate advantage back to nine, 21-12, thanks to her layup 30 seconds into the quarter.
- Virginia Tech trimmed the Upstate lead to one, 28-27, thanks to a 3-pointer by Aisha Sheppard at the 5:27 mark. Sheppard would sink another 3-pointer on the next Hokie possession to give the hosts their first lead of the night.
- After a Taylor Emery free throw broke a 32-32 tie with 3:23 left, Kuzmina sank a pair of free throws to allow Upstate to retake the lead. The Spartans led 40-36 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Kendyl Brooks and Williams traded 3-pointers to open the 3rd quarter as Upstate led 43-39 at the 8:06 mark.
- The combination of another Brooks 3-pointer followed by a Jean jumper gave the Hokies a 44-43 edge with 7:10 to play.
- Upstate would remain within a point, 46-45, after a Thorpe jumper with 6:22 left before Virginia Tech closed out the third quarter on a 17-5 run to lead 60-53.
FOURTH QUARTER BREAKDOWN
- Upstate was outscored 24-6 over the final 10 minutes.
- Brittney Delva scored five of Upstate's six points.
- The Hokies shot 60 percent from the field in the final stanza.
