Spartanburg, S.C. – The Furman Paladins took advantage of three USC Upstate errors by scoring four unearned runs in a 7-4 win over the Spartans in a non-conference game at Harley Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Furman improves to 6-2 while Upstate drops to 3-5.

Scoring Breakdown

Top 2^nd – Brandon Elmy reached on a leadoff walk followed by an error and fielder's choice that gave the Paladins runners at first and second without an out. Jabari Richards hit a three-run home run to give Furman a 3-0 lead. Carter Grote hit a triple with two outs and scored on a Landon Kay single.
Bottom 2^nd – J.J. Shimko led off with a double and scored on a Brendan Brundage double.
Bottom 4^th – Shimko reached on a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a Russell Schwertfeger single.
Bottom 5^th – Bourke led off the inning with a single followed by a Devon Ortiz base hit. Bourke and Ortiz moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt before Charlie Carpenter brought Bourke home with a single. The Spartans would leave the bases loaded after a strikeout and fly out ended the inning.
Top 6^th – Jason Costa opened the inning with a single followed by a walk. Chadwick Word singled to right field and advanced to third thanks to an error as two runs scored. Word would score on a groundout for the final run of the inning.
Bottom 8^th – Schwertfeger reached on a Furman error and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a Bourke base hit.

Notables

Bourke went 4-for-4 with four singles, a run scored and an RBI.
Shimko and Brundage each had two hits.
Kay and Word led Furman with two hits each.
Heath Hawkins (1-0) picked up the win after allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Jake Crawford, who started the game at third base, recorded his second save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Will Wheeler (0-1) took the loss as he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk in 2.0 innings.
Upstate left 13 runners on base and had the bases loaded in the fifth and ninth innings.
