Carter Paces Upstate on Day One of Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate

Aiken, S.C. – Matt Carter began his day with an opening round 70 to lead the USC Upstate men's golf team after 36 holes of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Monday at the par 70, 6617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
Upstate currently sits in 18th place after the first two rounds with a combined score of 608 (300-308) highlighted by a 300 in the opening round. The Spartans are six strokes back of Charleston Southern and seven of Temple.
Carter tops Upstate on the individual leaderboard as he is tied for 54th place after posting scores of 70 and 78 for a two-round score of 148. Jordan Warnock is two strokes back of Carter in a tie for 61st at 150 (74-76). Taylor White (77-78) and Hunter Fry (79-76) are the third-highest Spartans as both sit tied for 80th position with a 155. Sam Merrell rounded out the day for Upstate in 89th place after carding a 162 (79-83).
Virginia, ranked third nationally, leads the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate by three strokes over Clemson at 17-under 543. Individually, Virginia's Derek Bard and Doc Redman of Clemson are tied for first at 6-under 134.
The final round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available on www.upstatespartans.com via Golfstat.
NOTABLES
- Carter's opening round 70 is his third-lowest round of the season after posting back-to-back scores of 68 and 69 at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate.
- Carter is tied with six players in the tournament field after carding a team-high seven birdies on Monday including five in his first round.
- Warnock ranked among the best players on par 3 holes during the opening two rounds after posting an average score of 1-under par with a 2.88 stroke average.
- Fry tied his career-low score of 76 in the second round which he also set at the season-opening Bridgestone Match Play.
- The Spartans totaled 15 birdies to begin play at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate led by Carter's seven. Warnock and White each tallied three, while Fry added two.
