SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team had an eventful fall in which they participated in five different invitational's across the southeast.
"For the most part, I liked the way we competed throughout our fall slate," USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane said. "Even though we didn't always have our best tennis and we didn't always have our full lineup at every event. I feel like we've been able to clean up a good bit of our mistakes and we have put some good work in on building our patterns and match tactics. We've got a good mix of some older guys with experience and some younger guys who can play and I'm excited to see how we show up in January when we come back from break. We play a fairly tough schedule this year but I'm confident that our guys will be ready to get things going when we open up with some road tests early in the spring."
In the first invitational of the season the Spartans traveled to UNC Greensboro to take on a variety of schools. In the first round of the doubles portion of the competition the Spartans battled fellow Big South foe Campbell University. The Spartans No. 3 doubles team of Russwurm and Frederick Sydow (Oranjestad, Aruba) defeated Campbell 6-4.
On the second day of the tournament the Spartans came out locked in and focused against James Madison. No. 1 singles player Fernando Bernardes (Franca, Brazil) won the first set easily 6-2 but dropped the tiebreak in the second set. In the final set the senior leader stepped up and came away with a 10-7 set win over his counterpart to give USC Upstate a point.
For the second consecutive day Eble found himself in a three-set match but this time he came away victorious. The junior out of Germany won the opening set 7-5 and won the final set 10-5 to pick up his first win of the fall season. Freshman Leon Roider (Vienna, Austria) knocked off his opponent at No. 4 singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) to close out the scoring for the Spartans.
Later that day the Spartans faced Campbell in a singles match. Although the Spartans did not get the outcome they were looking for they still kept up with Campbell throughout the match. On four different courts the Spartans forced a third set against the Camels who finished second in the Big South last season.
On the final day of competition the Spartans competed against another Big South foe in singles competition. Radford may have gotten the better of USC Upstate but both Bernardes and Roider picked up wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. Russwurm came close to winning his match at the No. 5 singles position but fell in the final set 10-6.
In the second invitational of the season the Spartans traveled up the road to Davidson College. USC Upstate got off to a bit of a rough start in doubles competition against Queens University but came back with vengeance in the singles portion. The Spartans won four of the six singles courts and swept the top-three singles positions.
In the third invitational USC Upstate participated in the ITA Carolina Regional Invitational. Roider advanced out of the first round singles main draw with a straight sets win (6-1, 6-1) over Pablo Carranza of N.C. A&T. Roider fell in the second round of the main draw to the No. 12 player in the tournament Rrezart Cungu of Wake Forest.
In the consolation draw Francisco Neto advanced to the round of 32 after a win over Callum Rendle of Wofford. Neto fell to Raphael Calzi of Campbell who made it all the way to the semi-finals of the consolations draw.
In the main draw of the doubles competition the tandem of Roider and Fernando Bernardes defeated Wake Forest's Brant Fenno and Yuval Soloman 8-4. In the second round the tandem fell to the Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard of North Carolina the No. 3 seed in the tournament and the eventually champions of the invitational. In the doubles consolation bracket the duo of Neto and Eble defeated Elon's Bonetta and Condos 8-6.
At the Big South Fall Invitational in October Roider made the biggest impact in the singles draw. The freshman out of Austria made a run all the way to the quarterfinals round of the invitational. Roider finished up his fall by having another quality outing at the UTC Duals in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Against UNC Asheville in the UTC Duals Roider, Bernardes and Russwurm all picked up victories in the singles competition to give USC Upstate a 3-2 win in the singles portion of the competition against the Bulldogs. In the Eastern Illinois match the Spartans doubles teams came out ready to go as the tandem of Frederik Sydow and Bernardes won 6-2. The Spartans clinched the doubles point when Diniz and Roider won their match 6-4. In the singles portion USC Upstate finished with straight set sweeps at every flight.
The USC Upstate men's tennis team is less than a month away from the start of their spring tennis season. The Spartans begin the season on the road against N.C. State on Saturday, January 11 at 4:00 p.m.
