The University of South Carolina Upstate Athletic Department is launching a JoinUp fundraising campaign on #GivingTuesday to help offset the revenue loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The USC Upstate athletic department is facing an annual budget shortfall of roughly 15% in 2020-21. That percentage is likely to continue to change with spring enrollment numbers, schedule changes, and the cost of implementing additional COVID-19 safety protocols. The department has deployed a number of mitigation measures, including hiring and spending freezes since March, dramatic operations budget cuts, and will continue to apply cost saving measures across all facets of its operations, but those measures by themselves are not enough to balance the budget.Â
Â
"We are facing unprecedented budget challenges like we've never faced before," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Daniel Feig. "The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted all operations of our department, including all of the most significant areas of our funding. Specifically, like many other universities this year, USC Upstate has experienced a significant enrollment decline, NCAA revenues were paid to the membership at roughly 30% of budgeted levels, and we lost hundreds of thousands of dollars of guarantee game revenue due to pandemic scheduling changes. The combination of these factors, among others, caused the perfect storm to devastate our finances. As such, we're asking all alumni and supporters to help us bridge this gap and show their commitment to USC Upstate by making a one-time gift to the U Club as part of this campaign."Â
Â
By giving to the JoinUP campaign, supporters can help Spartan Athletics fulfill our mission of winning championships on the court, while supporting student-athletes' academically and preparing them for successful lives off the court after graduation. All gifts will directly impact student-athlete experience and success.
Â
Gifts made to the JoinUP campaign are tax-deductible. If you would like more information on the JoinUP campaign, or to give, please click here
