CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced today the cancellation of the 2021 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships. The event was originally scheduled for Feb. 27-28 at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C., but the facility has informed the conference it has canceled all events for the foreseeable future.
In making this difficult decision, the Big South Council of Athletics Directors determined cancelling the championships instead of seeking alternate venues just seven weeks away from the event was the most prudent course of action to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes.
"We regret having to cancel the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships," commented Commissioner Kyle Kallander. "The Big South membership has been working hard to preserve student-athlete opportunities, but circumstances are preventing us from moving forward. We look forward to celebrating our track and field student-athletes at the upcoming Big South Cross Country and Outdoor Track & Field Championships."
The Big South will continue its plans to host the Cross Country Championships at Winthrop University, and the Outdoor Track & Field Championships at High Point University.
Additionally, the Buccaneer Invitational scheduled for this weekend has been canceled by ETSU due to logistical challenges surrounding COVID-related concerns. Subsequently, all indoor meets that the Spartans were originally set to compete in have been canceled. A new schedule will be announced when applicable.
