A Big First Inning and a Lockdown Bullpen Lead Baseball to Series-Opening Victory Over Xavier

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Back at Cleveland S. Harley Park after a midweek detour at Clemson, USC Upstate baseball found itself back in the win column Friday night as the Spartans jumped out early and hung on late in the series opener against Xavier.

Continuing a trend of jumping out behind a crooked inning, the Spartans kicked things off in the home half of the first by sending 11 men to the plate to lead to a six-run frame as each of the first eight batters of the game reached base. At the plate, senior rightfielder Noah Myers (3-for-5), freshman designated hitter Noah Sullivan (4-for-5), redshirt sophomore third baseman Troy Hamilton (3-for-5), and redshirt junior centerfielder Jack Hennessy (2-for-3) each produced multi-hit efforts.

Out of the bullpen, Sullivan and senior right-hander Kevin Davis proved calming influences, combining to toss 4.1 innings, including the final 2.1 scoreless frames from Davis to lead to the victory. For Sullivan, he collected the win, his third of the season, while Davis nailed down his first save of the year.

Scoring Summary
  • B1: Opening the game with a triple to center, Noah Myers kickstarted the scoring in the first inning as he was brought home by Devin Buckner. Things kept rolling from there as Noah Sullivan and Cameron MacIntosh added RBI singles. Another run came home as Jack Hennessy reached on a fielder's choice, plating MacIntosh before Myers chipped in an RBI single of his own in a six-run frame.
  • T3: Behind a pair of extra-base hits, Xavier got back three runs in the third as Jerry Huntzinger drove home one with a double before Luke Franzoni clubbed a two-run blast to left.
  • T5: Hitting his second homer of the game, Franzoni drew Xavier closer with a solo shot to left in the fifth.
  • B5: The Spartans got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Damon Maynard hit a ball to first that drew a throw home to try and nab a charging Troy Hamilton. Hamilton slid in ahead of the tag and proved the deciding run for Upstate.
  • T7: Connecting on the Musketeers' third long ball of the game, Huntzinger deposited a ball over the wall in left, driving in a pair of runs to pull within one.

Notable
