Heading back to the course on the team's shortest turnaround of the season—less than one week—USC Upstate women's golf enters a second straight event seeking to defend a tournament title, doing so this time at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Arden, N.C.
Last season, the Spartans captured the team title at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational, outlasting Gardner-Webb, Tennessee Tech, and UNC Asheville in match-play. Upstate, as the event's No. 1 seed, defeated No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech before downing No. 2 seed UNC Asheville en route to the team championship.
Upstate enters the 2023 French Broad Collegiate Invitational carrying a streak of three consecutive top-five finishes after capturing a third-place finish at the Terrier Intercollegiate last Tuesday. The Spartans were the lone team at the event to post two 18-hole team totals lower than 300, turning in scores of 306-299-299-904 while also being the only team at the event to rank top three in all five of the tracked statistical categories (Par-3, Par-4, and Par-5 scoring, total pars, and total birdies).
Each member of the team's lineup and all six Spartans competing fashioned 54-hole scoring totals of 234 or better as the Terrier Intercollegiate marked the first event this season to see the feat. Sophomore Rylie Kosney and redshirt senior Preaw Nontarux captured top-10 finishes, placing sixth and tying for 10th, respectively. Kosney marked down career-low 18 and 54-hole totals, carding totals of 72-72-74-221 while Nontarux wrote in marks of 75-73-76-224.
Play at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational begins with 36 holes on Monday before wrapping with the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
