A Career-High Four RBI and Three-Run Home Run From Adam Grob Propels Baseball to Series-Clinching Win Over Towson

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Looking to build upon the team's season-opening victory Friday night, USC Upstate baseball captured its first series victory of the year as the Spartans overcame a two-run first-inning deficit in a 9-2 win over Towson Saturday afternoon at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

Despite giving up a pair of first-inning hits and runs, senior right-hander Chase Matheny bowed his neck and pitched his way into the fifth inning, scattering five hits and no runs over his final 3.2 innings of work to allow the Spartans to strike in the middle innings. Taking over on the mound for Matheny, sophomore righty Noah Sullivan tossed 3.1 innings of two-hit baseball to earn the win before giving way to junior righty Nate Thomas who pitched a scoreless ninth.

Taking advantage of two free bases and a passed ball in the sixth, Upstate hung six runs on the board to battle back and take the lead. An executed squeeze play and a three-run home run from senior centerfielder Adam Grob helped propel the six-run frame, producing four of the six runs.

  • B8: Benefitting from three walks in the inning, Upstate tallied two additional runs as Grob collected his fourth RBI of the day, drawing a walk with the bases loaded. David Pereira added the game's final run with a sacrifice fly to right.

Notable
  • Hitting a three-run homer and drawing a walk with the bases loaded, Adam Grob drove home a career-high-tying four runs Saturday against Towson. The game marks his second multi-run game of the season—in as many games—and the eighth of his career.
  • Tossing 3.1 runs of two-hit relief, allowing just four baserunners, Noah Sullivan earned his first victory of the season—the first win by a Spartan relief pitcher this season. The win improves the sophomore to 7-0 in his career on the mound after going 6-0 last season.
  • Out of the bullpen through the first two games of the season, five Upstate pitchers have combined to throw 7.1 innings, surrendering just six hits and one run.
  • After seeing seven Spartans make their Upstate debut Friday night, three additional Spartans made their debut Saturday. Redshirt junior catcher David Pereira, graduate infielder Braxton Boddorf, and junior right-hander Nate Thomas each made their Upstate debut Saturday.
