HIGH POINT, N.C. – While battling adversity throughout the day, including an early deficit and extra innings, USC Upstate baseball remained poised as it battled back to earn a series sweep over High Point with an 8-6 extra-inning victory in Sunday's series finale.
Trailing for the first time in the series as High Point jumped out in the first with a pair of solo homers, the Spartans kept fighting, scratching for a run in the third as redshirt junior rightfielder
Daniel Gernon ripped a double inside the third base bag. Upstate took the lead with a four-spot in the sixth before seeing the game go back and forth in the final frames, ultimately, sending the game to extras.
With one out in the 10
th, Upstate used five straight hits to break the tie and take the lead, scoring three runs in the inning. Redshirt junior
Troy Hamilton got the scoring started with a two-run single through the left side before redshirt junior first baseman
Grant Sherrod drove in an insurance run with a single to center. Tossing the ninth and tenth innings, redshirt sophomore right-hander
Jake Cubbler slammed the door to earn the win for the Spartans.

- B1: Striking first, High Point got on the board with a pair of solo homers coming from Brett Ahalt and Cael Chatham.
- T3: Getting back one of the runs and cutting the deficit, Upstate scored using a pair of doubles as Daniel Gernon ripped a double inside the third base bag to score Kyle Henington from second.
- T6: With two outs in the inning, the Spartans tied the game as David Pereira singled back through the middle to bring in Easton Cullison. Upstate took the lead as a throwing error brought home two more runs with Troy Hamilton adding a third with a single back through the box.
- B6: Trailing by three, High Point pulled within one on Blake Sutton's two-run home run.
- B8: The Panthers tied the game with another solo homer in the eighth with Javon Fields hitting the home run.
- T10: Using five straight one-out hits, Upstate pushed across three runs in the tenth to take the lead. Hamilton drove home the first two as he laced a single through the left side, scoring Braxton Boddorf and Henington. Grant Sherrod added an insurance run with a single to center to drive home Cole Caruso.
- B10: High Point cut into the lead with an RBI single to right from Chatham.
Notable
- With its win Sunday, Upstate has swept each of its Big South-opening series under head coach Mike McGuire. The Spartans swept Radford in 2021, Presbyterian in 2022, and High Point in 2023.
- Winning in extras, the Spartans played their first extra-inning contest since April 19, 2022, against College of Charleston. The victory snapped a two-game extra-inning game losing streak with the last extra-inning win coming on April 3, 2021, versus Radford.
- After saving Saturday's victory for the Spartans, Jake Cubbler earned the victory for the Spartans Sunday, earning a decision in consecutive games. He improves to 2-0 on the season with one save.
