Daniel Gernon, Troy Hamilton, and Grant Sherrod Homer as Baseball's Comeback Big Falls Short in 15-9 Slugfest Loss at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Entering Saturday with a chance to even its first road weekend series of the season, USC Upstate baseball saw its comeback attempt in the late innings of Saturday's game fall short as Upstate dropped a 15-9 decision at Troy.

For the first time in three games and the fourth time this season, the Spartans hit three or more homers as redshirt junior centerfielder Daniel Gernon, redshirt junior shortstop Troy Hamilton, and redshirt junior leftfielder Grant Sherrod each homered. For Sherrod, he ties for the team lead with his third homer of the season while Gernon's and Hamilton's home runs are their second of the season.

Adding to his two-run homer, Hamilton picked up a second hit as he recorded a multi-hit and multi-RBI game, doing so for the second time this season—also doing so with a three-hit, four-RBI game at North Florida on Feb. 21. Sophomore designated hitter Noah Sullivan collected the other multi-hit game for Upstate with Sherrod and redshirt junior second baseman Noah Rabon collecting multi-RBI games with two runs batted in apiece.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Stepping to the plate with one out and working himself ahead in the count, Daniel Gernon launched a solo homer to center to put Upstate on the board first in the first inning.
  • B1: Answering the Spartans' solo shot in the top of the inning, Kole Myers led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to tie the game.
  • T3: After seeing Johnny Sweeney reach base to start the inning with a single to left-center, Troy Hamilton hit a two-run shot to left-center to deliver Upstate the lead and a two-run advantage.
  • T4: Taking advantage of two Troy errors in the inning to put runners on the corners, the Spartans added to their lead as David Pereira laid down a sac bunt as Noah Rabon raced home to score. The run gave Upstate a 4-1 lead.
  • B4: With two on and one out, Shane Lewis tied the game for Troy with a three-run blast to right, tying the game at four.
  • B5: Seeing its first two runs of the inning with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk, Lewis added the final two runs in a four-run frame as he picked up a pair of RBI with a single through the left side.
  • B7: Posting its second four-run inning of the night, the Trojans picked up a run with a single through the right side from Hudson Hartsfield. Troy added a second run on an Upstate throwing error before completing the inning's scoring with a two-run double from Ethan Kavanagh.
  • T8: Following up a leadoff single from Noah Sullivan, Grant Sherrod launched a two-run homer to left-center to trim the deficit.
  • B8: Getting back the runs it surrendered in the top of the inning, Lewis hit a three-run homer—his second of the game—to rightfield.
  • T9: Loading the bases in the inning, Upstate scored its first two runs of the frame as Rabon laced a single into the right-center gap before a wild pitch capped the inning and game's scoring with Sullivan coming into score.

Notable
  • Hitting his third home run of the season and his third homer in the past eight days, Grant Sherrod tied for the team lead in homers, equaling the total of Jace Rinehart. Sherrod enters Sunday's game with four career homers after today's long ball.
  • With his two-run homer and a single Saturday, Troy Hamilton secured his second game with both a multi-hit and multi-RBI game, doing so for the first time since Feb. 21. Both games have included a home run.
