SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With persistent rain moved out and blustery conditions continuing, USC Upstate baseball weathered a late comeback attempt to complete its sweep of Longwood with a 5-4 victory Friday at Cleveland S. Harley Park, securing the Spartans' best start to conference play in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.).
Building upon the momentum of its doubleheader sweep to open the series, the Spartans wasted little time in getting on the board Friday, scoring a pair of runs in the first. Withstanding a Lancer run in the second, Upstate tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth before holding on for the one-run victory in the ninth as redshirt sophomore right-hander
Jake Cubbler picked up his fourth save of the season to secure the win.

th multi-RBI game of the season and second of the weekend, finishing 1-for-3 with two RBI. Recording his 12

Scoring Summary
- B1: Following up a leadoff double with a pair of sacrifice bunts, including one that featured a throwing error to allow a run, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead. Upstate followed the throwing error with a sacrifice fly from Grant Sherrod to create a two-run lead.
- T2: The Lancers answered the Spartans' two runs in the first with a run of their own in the second as Drew Camp doubled home a run on a ball down the leftfield line.
- B6: Adding to its lead, Upstate scored three insurance runs to stake a 5-1 lead. Sherrod drove in the inning's first tally with a fielder's choice to short before Ty Tilson plated a run with a single into center. The inning's final run crossed the plate on a double steal with Easton Cullison swiping home.
- T8: Getting back two runs, Longwood pushed across a pair of runs using a sacrifice fly and RBI single from Gregory Ryan and Luis DeLeon, respectively.
- T9: Posting their final tally of the game using a second sacrifice fly, with Eliot Dix driving home the final run.
Notable
- Improving to 8-1 in Big South play in 2023 with its win Friday, Upstate secured its best start to conference play in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.). The 8-1 start breaks a tie with the program's 7-1 start from the 2022 season.
- Earning the save Friday, Jake Cubbler earned his fourth save of the season with each save coming during Big South play. He's earned a save in each of the Spartans' Big South series this season, picking up two in the series sweep of Longwood.
- In its third series sweep of the season, Upstate saw each of its starting pitchers earn a victory in its series with Longwood as Reese Dutton picked up the win in game one, Mathieu Curtis the win in game two, and Henry Proger the win in game three. It marks the first time the feat has been accomplished this season by the Spartans.
