
USC Upstate Student-Athletes Put Forth Record-Breaking Semester in the Classroom

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Continuing its streak of stellar semesters in the classroom, USC Upstate student-athletes fashioned another record-breaking effort during the fall, resulting in the highest-recorded, department-wide grade point average. Upstate student-athletes achieved a 3.33 GPA this semester as 196 student-athletes maintained a GPA greater than 3.00 while 53 achieved a 4.0.

"I am incredibly proud of our student-athlete's efforts in the classroom this semester," said Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Enrichment/Senior Women's Administrator Sarah Gildersleeve-Jones. "They continue to raise the bar as they set a new semester department GPA record! Every single team achieved a 3.0 or higher for the first time in department history and it truly speaks to our student-athletes valuing the opportunity to pursue a diploma while simultaneously competing at the highest level. I am thrilled to see how they build on their success as we head into the Spring semester."

This new GPA record highlights our department's dedication to the holistic development of USC Upstate student-athletes, ensuring excellence in the classroom, in competition, and after graduation, said Director of Athletics Matthew Martin. "This achievement is not only a testament to the diligence of our student-athletes, but also to our coaches, staff, and our wonderful professors and colleagues across the university, who all work diligently to prepare our student-athletes to reach Greater Heights each day."

Thirteen Upstate athletic programs achieved a team GPA of 3.00 or greater, the first time in department history with all 13 programs exceeding the mark. Women's cross country setting the department's highwater mark with a 3.79 GPA while volleyball (3.74), women's basketball (3.70), softball (3.66), and baseball (3.39) rounded out the remainder of the top five.
