Career-Long Outing from Chris Torres and Sixth-Inning Outburst Lead Baseball to Sweep of Gardner-Webb Behind 12-3 Win Sunday

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Extending its winning streak over the Runnin' Bulldogs to a commanding 12 games, USC Upstate baseball finished off its third sweep inside Big South Conference play behind a sixth-inning outburst at the plate and stout pitching performances in a 12-3 win Sunday over Gardner-Webb at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.

Securing his team-leading sixth quality start of the season, sophomore left-handed pitcher Chris Torres struck out six en route to his team-high fifth win. He tossed a career-long 7.0 innings for the Spartans, scattering seven hits and eight baserunners throughout the afternoon. Backing Torres from the pen, sophomore right-hander Cooper Ellingworth fashioned a pair of hitless and scoreless frames to finish the Upstate win.

The Spartans' three middle-of-the-order bats fuelled the team's victory as each redshirt junior rightfielder Scott Campbell, senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney, and redshirt sophomore centerfielder Scott Newman picked up multi-hit and multi-RBI days. Sweeney paced Upstate with four hits on the day as he and Campbell drove home three runs apiece while Campbell and Newman slugged two-run homers.

How It Happened
  • T1: Taking advantage of four free bases in the inning, Upstate pushed across the first run as Preston Lucas drew an HBP with the bases loaded.
  • B2: Getting its run back, Gardner-Webb took its first lead in the series behind a two-run sinking single into rightfield from Nick Capozzi.
  • T5: Stringing together back-to-back hits from the middle of the order, the Spartans regained the advantage behind a two-run homer from Scott Newman off the batter's eye in dead center.
  • B5: Answering the Spartans, the Runnin' Bulldogs fought back to tie the game in on an RBI single into center by Ryan Kennell.
  • T6: Busting the tie game and blowing the game open, Upstate hung six on the scoreboard in the sixth. Scott Campbell, Johnny Sweeney (two), Preston Lucas, and Wylie Waters all picked up RBI with a wild pitch leading to another tally.
  • T8: Adding another RBI, Sweeney dumped a single into rightfield as Campbell raced home to score.
  • T9: Picking up his second and third RBI of the afternoon, Campbell deposited a baseball in the trees in left, his two-run shot capping the day's scoring.

Notable
  • Behind his three-RBI afternoon, Johnny Sweeney becomes the ninth different Spartan in program history with a 60-RBI season, notching the 10th such season in program history. He exits the weekend ranked fourth in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) and 10th in program history for single-season RBI.
  • Slugging a two-run shot off the batter's eye, Scott Newman launched his team-leading 16th home run of the year, tying for sixth on the program's single-season home run leaderboard. He ties for fourth on the program's D1 era leaderboard for the category following the Gardner-Webb series.
  • Reaching base three times Sunday, Vance Sheahan extended his team-long reached base streak to a career-high-tying 32 games. His two 32-game streaks give Upstate a 30-plus game reached base streak in consecutive seasons and are the longest since a 34-game streak by Noah Sullivan in 2022.
