Baseball Celebrates Seniors with Wins in Both Ends of Saturday's Doubleheader, Securing Series Sweep Over Presbyterian

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Closing the team's slate at Cleveland S. Harley Park as it wrapped its penultimate Big South Conference series as the season trends toward the final week of the regular season, USC Upstate baseball swept its Saturday doubleheader against Presbyterian, securing a series sweep behind 12-3 and 10-2 victories over the Blue Hose. The twin bill marked Upstate's first doubleheader sweep since early April 2023 and pushed the Spartans to 30 wins, hitting the mark for the fifth straight season.

Ahead of game one, Upstate honored a pair of graduating Spartans, celebrating the contributions to the programs of senior right-handed pitcher Kyle Beaty and junior right-hander Braden Consaul. Following Consaul's lead from Friday evening, Beaty worked the final three innings of Upstate's 12-3 game one win, earning his first save of the year as he permitted one hit while striking out three.

Adding another parallel to Friday evening's win, Upstate in game one of the twin bill erased an early three-run deficit, tying the game before using a high-scoring fifth inning against a Presbyterian relief pitcher, collecting seven more fifth-inning tallies. A day after legging out seven doubles, the Spartans tallied seven more Saturday across two games, ending the series with 14 two-baggers, the most in a three-game series this season.

How It Happened (Game One)
  • T1: Leading off the game by hitting the first pitch of the day off the leftfield foul pole, Rhogue Wallace began a two-run first inning for Presbyterian. The second run pushed across on a groundout from Ammon Dewberry.
  • T3: Building its second three-run lead of the weekend, the Blue Hose used an RBI single to left from Matthew Rollison to create the advantage.
  • B4: Fighting back to even the game, Upstate tallied three in the fourth inning, doing so behind a wild pitch, an RBI groundout from Henry Zenor, and an RBI double from Vance Sheahan.
  • B5: Sending 10 hitters to the plate, the Spartans used another big fifth inning to push themselves to a lead they'd not relinquish. The biggest of the five hits in the inning came from Scott Newman, a three-run homer to left-center to close the inning's scoring.
  • B6: Ending its scoring much like it began—with RBI from Zenor and Sheahan—Upstate hung two final runs on the board in the sixth behind a single and a sac fly to centerfield.

Game Information (Game Two)
Score: USC Upstate 10; Presbyterian 2
Records: USC Upstate (30-22; 16-5 Big South); Presbyterian (17-32; 9-15 Big South)

How It Happened (Game Two)
  • B1: Jumping out to the lead early for the first time in the series, Upstate plated four runs in the opening frame. An RBI double from Scott Campbell plated the first run before a sac fly from Preston Lucas added the next. A Blue Hose throwing error allowed the third run to score before an RBI single from Jake Armsey closed the stanza's scoring.
  • T2: Getting a run back, Presbyterian's Ryan Ouzts hit a solo shot to left-center.
  • B2: Extending its lead back to four runs, Upstate used another Presbyterian error to secure its next tally with Scott Campbell scoring from second on a throwing error.
  • B5: Dropping a single into shallow centerfield, Henry Zenor drove home a pair to lengthen the Upstate lead.
  • B6: Splitting the right-center gap with a double, Scott Newman chased home another Spartan run.
  • T8: Benefitting from an Upstate error, Presbyterian scored its final tally in the eighth inning.
  • B8: Finishing the day's scoring, Lucas and Newman used back-to-back singles to drive home the Spartans' final runs.

Notable
  • Taking both ends of Saturday's twin bill, USC Upstate swept its first doubleheader since taking both ends from Longwood on April 6, 2023. The sweep ends a streak of four consecutive doubleheaders without a sweep for the Spartans.
  • Exiting the weekend series with Presbyterian, Upstate reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth straight season, the longest stretch of 30-win seasons in program history, the 13th such season in program history. Head coach Kane Sweeney joins John Daurity (1986; 34 wins) as the only Spartan coaches with a 30-win season in their inaugural campaign atop the program.
  • Recording an RBI in game one of Saturday's twin bill, Johnny Sweeney collected his 78th RBI of the season, tying former teammate Grant Sherrod's program record mark set in 2024.
  • Reaching in all three games this weekend, Vance Sheahan extended his reached base streak to 39 games, the longest known streak in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.).

Up Next for the Spartans
Hitting the road for the team's final midweek contest, Upstate ventures to the Lowcountry for a trip to Patriots Point for a meeting with the College of Charleston. The Spartans and Cougars see a 6 p.m. ET first pitch Tuesday evening.
