SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore outside hitter Summer Kohler recorded her seventh double-double of the season, helping lead USC Upstate to a dominate 3-0 sweep of Charleston Southern on Friday evening inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
Kohler finished her night with a team high 11 kills to go along with 15 digs. Savannah Page also had an impactful night at the net for the Spartans, recording eight kills. Kamyla Vega David finished just short of her own double-double, notching 21 assists and nine digs. Upstate was masterful at the service line, ending the night with seven aces.
The Spartans wasted no time creating separation in the opening set as Vega David ripped off the initial seven points, including a pair of service aces. Charleston Southern was able to use a mini run to close the deficit to 12-8, but would not get any closer than that, falling 25-17 in set one.
After trading the first 10 points of the match, Page connected on a kill to give the Spartans a brief 1-point advantage. However, the back-and-forth affair continued. With the score knotted at 10-all, Upstate gained a bit of breathing room following a brief 5-1 run that put the home team ahead 23-18. Kills from Alyssa Hook and Kensley Haneline ended the set while putting the Spartans up 2-0 in the match.
Charleston Southern was the aggressor to begin the third, doubling up the Spartans 4-2 on the scoreboard early on. That advantage grew to 9-5 before a 6-1 offensive burst gave Upstate its first lead of the match, 11-10. The two teams continued to battle, however, a crucial 7-0 put the Spartans in the driver's seat. From that point, the game was academic as Kohler capped her big night with a kill to wrap things up.
USC Upstate will return to action tomorrow afternoon, playing host to the Blue Hose of Presbyterian in a Big South contest. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
