FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. – After finishing second as a team in stroke play at the Big South Men's Golf Championship, USC Upstate advanced to match play for the second straight season. The Spartans finished Big South Runner Up after a closely contested final match.
Facing Winthrop in the semifinal, USC Upstate advanced on a 3-2 win. Nate Heller won his match 3&1, gaining momentum after an eagle on hole four. His win evened the match at 1-1.
Using seven pars and one eagle, Jackson Stone secured his match win at 4&2, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1. Winthrop leveled the contest at 2-2, leaving the deciding match to Jaskaran Sohl. Playing all 18 holes, Sohal proved clutch for the Spartans, sending them to the finals with a 1UP win.
Teeing off against Presbyterian in the final, Phuthanate Kangwol was the first Spartan to win his match, defeating his opponent 6&5.
Jaskaran Sohal won his second match of the day at 2UP, evening the contest at 2-2.
After Alec Prentice sank a birdie putt on hole 18 to tie his match, the Spartans saw déjà vu, once again going to playoff holes to determine the champion. Presbyterian ultimately came out on top in the second playoff hole.
