CLINTON, S.C. – Closing its Big South Conference schedule with a rubber match in its final league series, USC Upstate baseball captured its first road series victory of the 2026 campaign, downing Presbyterian 13-4 Sunday afternoon. The Spartans enter the final week of the regular season locked into the Big South Baseball Championship field and wait for their final seeding to be determined next Saturday.

Continuing the streak of starting pitchers posting career-long starts to four, junior right-handed pitcher Brent Stukes turned in a career-long-tying 7.0 innings, earning his third quality start of the campaign—all three Upstate starting pitchers notched quality starts in the series. He scattered seven hits and two earned runs on the afternoon while striking out five against no free bases (walks & HBP).

As a pitching staff, Stukes, sophomore right-hander Cayden Mackey, and sophomore righty Brad Benton combined to strike out eight batters and allow no walks or hit batsmen. Sunday's contest marked the first since March 3 at South Carolina that the Spartan pitching staff did not allow a walk or HBP. Benton punched out two, firing a hitless and scoreless frame, his fifth scoreless appearance of the season.

Offensively, Upstate posted its fifth double-figure scoring game in May, collecting 13 runs behind 10 hits. Leading the Spartans, redshirt sophomore rightfielder Henry Zenor fashioned both a multi-hit and a multi-RBI game, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, two walks, and a career-high five RBI.

Senior leftfielder Preston Lucas and redshirt senior second baseman Alex Ritzer joined Zenor with multi-RBI efforts, driving home three and two runs, respectively. Ritzer's two RBI came behind his first home run of the season. Joining Zenor with multi-hit days, redshirt senior third baseman Jake Armsey and senior first baseman Wylie Waters registered two hits apiece.

How It Happened

T2: Jumping on the board early in the contest with its highest-scoring inning of the weekend, Upstate scored five runs in the frame. A pair of productive outs, a sac fly from Jake Armsey and an RBI groundout from Preston Lucas, provided the first two Spartan tallies. Henry Zenor capped the opening frame with the stanza's biggest swing, a three-run homer to right.
T3: Chipping in another run batted in, Lucas plated a run with a single to leftfield.
B3: Answering the Spartan tallies, the Blue Hose scratched a pair in the third behind RBI singles from Bo Moody and James Green.
T4: Providing their response and getting their runs back, the Spartans marked two tallies on the scoreboard. A triple into the rightfield corner from Zenor plated the first before Tyler Lang drove him in with a sac fly to left.
T5: Tacking on a run to its advantage and adding an RBI to his daily collection, Zenor plated Upstate's ninth run with a bases-loaded walk.
B6: Getting a run back for his team, Emory Guilford slugged a solo homer to right.
T7: A wild pitch and two-run homer from Alex Ritzer added three tallies to the Spartans' lead.
B8: Notching his third RBI of the day, Lucas plated Upstate's final run with a sac fly to center.
T9: Scoring their final run, the Blue Hose ended the day's scoring with a sac fly to right from Brody Linker.

Notable

Drawing a fourth-inning HBP, Johnny Sweeney broke a tie with former teammate Scott Campbell for the program's single-season record for HBP, drawing his 24^th of the season. Sweeney is the only player in program history with multiple seasons drawing 20-plus HBP.

Closing the season with four non-conference contests, Upstate begins the regular season's finale week with the campaign's final midweek contest, hosting Clemson Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Park—Home of the Hub City Spartanburgers.
