SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer delivered a memorable home opener Thursday evening, scoring twice in the opening 16 minutes before responding to a second-half Davidson equalizer to secure a 3-2 victory at County University Soccer Stadium.
The victory marked head coach Sam Odell's first win at the helm of the USC Upstate women's soccer program.
Three different Spartans found the back of the net as Jasmyn Mitchner, Annabelle Wunderlich and Liana Bryant supplied the offense. Mitchner added an assist on Bryant's eventual game-winner, while Cansu Kara and Danielle Trovato each contributed assists. In goal, Hannah Wilt turned away seven of Davidson's nine shots on goal while playing the full 90 minutes.
Upstate wasted little time taking control in front of the home crowd. Just 7:18 into the contest, Mitchner opened the scoring with her first goal as a Spartan. Kara and Trovato combined to set up Mitchner, who finished low to the right to give Upstate an early 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans doubled their lead less than eight minutes later. After Davidson was whistled for a foul in the box, Wunderlich stepped to the penalty spot and converted in the 16th minute, pushing Upstate's advantage to 2-0.
Just 7:34 after Davidson tied the match, the Spartans moved back in front for good. Mitchner helped create the opportunity, finding Bryant, who finished low to the left in the 72nd minute to give Upstate a 3-2 advantage.
The Spartans then protected their lead through the final 18 minutes. Davidson nearly found another equalizer when Isabella Harry hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute, but Upstate's defense held firm. Wilt made another save in the 85th minute, stopping Madelyn Hayes' attempt to help preserve the one-goal advantage.
Davidson finished with an 18-14 advantage in total shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal, but Upstate made its opportunities count. The Spartans held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and scored three times on six shots on target.
Bryant put all three of her shot attempts on goal and scored the game-winner, while Mitchner finished with a goal and an assist on three shots. Wunderlich added the Spartans' second goal, while Wilt's seven-save performance anchored Upstate on the defensive end.
The 3-2 final gave the Spartans the victory in their home opener and delivered the first win of the Sam Odell era at USC Upstate.
