CHARLOTTE, N.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer battled through a scoreless opening half and generated increased pressure over the final 45 minutes, but a 51st-minute goal proved to be the difference as Charlotte earned a 1-0 victory Sunday at Jen Gaber Field.

How It Happened

USC Upstate's defense was tested throughout the opening 45 minutes as Charlotte produced eight first-half shots and five corner kicks. Despite the pressure, the Spartans kept the 49ers off the scoreboard and entered halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt helped preserve the tie with a pair of first-half saves. She denied Evie Craven in the 22nd minute before stopping another Craven attempt in the 41st.
Charlotte finally broke through shortly after halftime. After Wilt stopped Chloe Salisbury's attempt in the 48th minute, Marlies Pison found the back of the net at the 50:21 mark to put the 49ers ahead, 1-0.

The Spartans responded by creating their best offensive opportunities of the afternoon. Liana Bryant registered Upstate's first shot of the match in the 58th minute, forcing Charlotte goalkeeper Anna Ford into a save.

Upstate continued to push as the second half progressed, earning four corner kicks after halftime. Back-to-back corners in the 77th and 78th minutes helped keep the Spartans in the attacking third before Katelyn Economopoulos sent an attempt wide in the 80th minute.

The Spartans generated two more chances over the final six minutes. Nevaeh Roark recorded a shot in the 85th minute before Bryant put another attempt on frame with less than three minutes remaining, but Ford made the save to preserve Charlotte's one-goal advantage.

Bryant led the Upstate attack with two shots, both on goal, while Economopoulos and Roark each added an attempt. The Spartans finished with four shots and placed two on frame. Charlotte held an 18-4 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Wilt turned in a strong performance in goal, playing all 90 minutes and making six saves, allowing just the lone second-half goal.
