CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Responding to an early deficit with three unanswered goals, USC Upstate women's soccer earned a 3-1 road victory over Queens Sunday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex.
The Spartans improved to 4-2-2 on the season behind goals from Katelyn Economopoulos, Lily MacCausland and Annabelle Wunderlich. Upstate controlled much of the match offensively, finishing with a 13-5 advantage in shots and putting nine attempts on goal.
Queens struck first in the sixth minute as Emma Miller found the back of the net off an assist from Tamia Ford, giving the Royals an early 1-0 advantage.
Upstate didn't stay behind for long. In the 14th minute, Economopoulos delivered the equalizer for her second goal of the season, leveling the match at 1-1. The Spartans needed just 63 seconds to strike again as MacCausland scored her first goal of the season at the 14:17 mark to put Upstate ahead 2-1.
The Spartans added to their advantage in the 25th minute. Following an Upstate corner, Wunderlich found the back of the net for her second goal of the year, pushing the lead to 3-1 and giving Upstate three goals in a span of just under 11 minutes.
Upstate carried its two-goal advantage into halftime after outshooting Queens 7-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Spartans continued to create opportunities in the second half, recording six more shots while holding the Royals to just two. Upstate's defense and goalkeeping kept Queens off the scoreboard for the remainder of the afternoon to secure the 3-1 victory.
Hannah Wilt started in goal for the Spartans and made one save during the opening 45 minutes. Kayla Cervantes took over in the second half and stopped both shots on goal she faced. The duo combined for three saves while allowing just the Royals' early goal.
Offensively, Angie Banks led Upstate with three shots, while Liana Bryant and Nevaeh Roark each recorded two. Nine of the Spartans' 13 attempts were on target.
