SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate men's soccer makes the short trip across Spartanburg Tuesday evening as the Spartans renew their crosstown rivalry with Wofford at Snyder Field. Kickoff between the Spartans and Terriers is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the match streaming live on ESPN+.
Upstate enters the midweek matchup at 2-5-0 following a 2-1 setback against College of Charleston Saturday at County University Soccer Stadium. The Spartans carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime after Oscar Kelly broke through for his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute off an assist from Tolu Fabamifobee. The Cougars responded with two goals in the second half to escape Spartanburg with the victory.
Looking to Bounce Back
Despite Saturday's result, Upstate continued to create opportunities in the attacking third. The Spartans outshot Charleston 10-5 during the opening 45 minutes, while Kelly finished the afternoon with a game-high seven shots.
Christian Cook and Josh Zawlocki have helped pace the Spartan attack this season with three goals apiece, while Bennett Leitner has added two. Kelly's goal Saturday gave Upstate another option in an attack that has produced 11 goals through its first seven matches.
Tuesday also marks another road test for a Spartan squad that has spent much of the early season away from County University Soccer Stadium. Upstate has already earned a road victory this season, shutting out ETSU 3-0 in Johnson City on Sept. 1.
Scouting Wofford
Wofford has put together a strong start to the 2026 campaign under head coach Ryan Osborne. The Terriers opened the year unbeaten through their first four completed matches, earning victories over Queens, Winthrop and Campbell along with a draw against Charlotte before suffering their first loss, 1-0, at UNC Asheville on Sept. 8.
The Terriers have shown an ability to generate chances throughout the early portion of the season. Against UNC Asheville, Wofford held a 17-7 advantage in shots despite the one-goal setback. Max Talley, one of two Terriers named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference Team alongside Declan Mettee, has also provided an attacking threat from the midfield.
Tuesday's contest falls in the middle of a four-match homestand for Wofford at Snyder Field before the Terriers turn their attention to Southern Conference play.
Crosstown Rivalry Renewed
Tuesday marks the 16th meeting between the programs in Upstate's recorded series history, with Wofford holding an 11-4 advantage. The Spartans, however, enter the matchup looking for their second consecutive victory over the Terriers.
The teams met last season at County University Soccer Stadium, where Upstate jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and held on for a 3-2 victory. Vitalis Takawira Jr. scored twice within an 18-second span before Fabamifobee added another goal just before halftime. Wofford scored twice after the break, but goalkeeper Jarrett Wuerslin and the Spartan defense preserved the victory.
Upstate has won four of the last eight meetings in the series, including a 4-2 road victory at Wofford in 2022. Tuesday will be the Spartans' first trip to Snyder Field to face the Terriers since that victory.
