Spartans Cruise to 3-0 Sweep of Western Carolina

SPARTANBURG S.C. – USC Upstate's volleyball team enjoyed a competitive win over Western Carolina at the G.B. Hodge Center in the latter half of the home-and-home series, sweeping the Catamounts by the final of 3-0 victory, while defending the home court.
The Spartans received big contributions from Summer Kohler, who recorded a team high 13 kills. Kohler also made strong contributions on the defensive side with 14 digs, notching her second consecutive double-double. Kensley Haneline also provided 11 kills while hitting .450.
Upstate's defense held strong with three Spartans recording double digit digs, led by Sophia Overholt with 18. Sarah O'Connor paced the team with 16 assists with Kamyla Vega David following closely with 14. The Spartans ended with 5 aces and 7.0 total blocks.
SET ONE
Upstate opened the match with a barrage of offense to take a quick lead in the first set. Tien Murray helped the Spartans early with back-to-back aces to gain a 5-3 advantage.
The Spartan's also turned defense to offense with huge blocks, including a block from Haneline to push the lead to 13-6.
Western closed the gap near the end of the set as they fought back 17-23 before two kills by Haneline and Overholt helped the Spartans close it out 25-17.
SET TWO
Western opened the second set with a quick 3-0 lead, but it was not long before Upstate fought back to take the lead 5-3 with kills from Savannah Page and Kohler.
Upstate battled back-and-forth with Western to even the score 14-14 halfway through the set with pivotal kills from Page and Sophia Spivey. A crucial block by Tehillah Garrison helped propel the Spartans to a 19-17 advantage late in the set.
A critical kill by Haneline pushed the Spartan advantage to 22-20 late in the set. Upstate fought off Western's comeback attempt to take the frame, 25-21.
SET THREE
The Spartans battled with Western early in the third set with an even score of 5-5. The Catamounts followed with 4 straight to push the score to 12-8, but Upstate fought back to even the score 13-13
The Spartans regained the lead 15-14 following a cruciall kill by Spivey. Upstate pushed its lead to 20-18, helped by a pair of big swings by Kohler.
The teams continued their back-and-forth battle before Upstate ultimately took the third set 25-22 to complete the match sweep.
UP NEXT
The Spartans go on the road to take on Clemson at Jervey Gym on Sunday as Upstate looks to improve to 6-1 away from home. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
