USC Upstate enters Thursday's matchup carrying momentum following a commanding 4-0 victory over Hampton Sunday night at County University Soccer Stadium. The victory improved the Spartans to 2-1-1 through their first four matches under first-year head coach Sam Odell.
The Spartans wasted little time establishing control against the Pirates, scoring three times in the opening 39 minutes. Liana Bryant opened the scoring just 3:29 into the match before Katelyn Economopoulos doubled the advantage in the 11th minute. Bryant struck again in the 39th minute to complete her brace before Danielle Trovato capped the scoring in the 58th minute.
Upstate finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots, a 7-2 edge in shots on goal and an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt made two saves while playing all 90 minutes to secure the Spartans' first clean sheet of the season.
Spartans Earn Big South Weekly Honors
Following their performances against Hampton, Bryant and Trovato swept a pair of Big South weekly awards. Bryant was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while Trovato earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Bryant has provided an immediate spark to the Spartan attack in her first season at Upstate. Through four matches, she has scored four goals, including two against Hampton, and has found the back of the net in three of Upstate's first four contests. She also scored against College of Charleston in the season opener and Davidson in the Spartans' home opener.
Trovato has contributed on both ends of the field, recording an assist in Upstate's 3-2 victory over Davidson before scoring her first goal as a Spartan against Hampton.
A Look at the Terriers
Wofford enters Thursday's contest with a 2-2-1 overall record and riding a two-match winning streak. The Terriers have also been perfect at Snyder Field to begin the regular season, owning a 2-0 home record.
The Terriers are coming off a 3-0 victory over South Carolina State on Sunday. Wofford controlled the match offensively, outshooting the Bulldogs 20-1 and placing 13 attempts on goal. Bella Drummond opened the scoring late in the first half before Annie Andrews and Maya Lake added second-half goals.
Andrews enters the matchup after recording a goal and an assist against South Carolina State, while goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola helped Wofford record its second shutout of the young season.
The Terriers are led by second-year head coach Kevin Dempsey. Thursday's contest is the third of five consecutive home matches for Wofford to close out its non-conference schedule.
Familiar Foes
Thursday marks the second consecutive season the Spartans and Terriers meet at Snyder Field. Upstate earned a 1-0 victory over Wofford in the 2025 season opener, with the deciding tally coming on a Terrier own goal in the 19th minute. The victory was Upstate's first over Wofford since 2019.
The 2024 meeting between the two Spartanburg programs ended in a scoreless draw at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate will look to continue its recent success in the series Thursday while also searching for its first road victory of the 2026 campaign. The Spartans are currently 0-1-1 away from County University Soccer Stadium after a 1-1 draw at College of Charleston and a 1-0 setback at Charlotte.
