Women's Soccer Heads to the Lowcountry to Face Charleston Southern

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer returns to the road Wednesday afternoon as the Spartans travel to Charleston to take on Charleston Southern in Big South Conference action. Kickoff from CSU Soccer Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Upstate enters Wednesday with a 4-2-3 official record after its scheduled Big South opener against Radford Saturday night was suspended in the 74th minute with the Spartans holding a 2-0 advantage. Liana Bryant accounted for both Upstate goals, finding the back of the net twice in the opening half before play was ultimately halted. Details regarding the resumption of the contest will be announced at a later date.
Prior to Saturday, the Spartans closed non-conference play with a 0-0 draw against USC Aiken. Upstate controlled much of the attacking play in the contest while recording its second clean sheet of the season. The result moved the Spartans to 4-2-3 through their first nine completed matches of the year.

UPSTATE NOTES
The Spartan attack has been led by Bryant, who entered conference play with three game-winning goals and 16 shots on goal through the opening nine matches. Freshman Jasmyn Mitchner has also emerged as one of Upstate's primary offensive threats with four goals and three assists for 11 points entering the conference portion of the schedule. Annabelle Wunderlich and Katelyn Economopoulos have each added two goals.
Upstate has also continued to receive strong play defensively. The Spartans allowed only 10 goals across their first nine matches, with Hannah Wilt and Valeria Cervantes sharing time in goal. Upstate entered Big South play coming off a defensive performance against USC Aiken in which it surrendered only four total shots.
Wednesday begins a stretch of back-to-back conference road contests for the Spartans, who will travel to Longwood Saturday following their meeting with the Buccaneers.
SCOUTING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
Charleston Southern enters Wednesday at 2-6 overall and 1-0 in Big South competition after opening league play with a 2-0 road victory over Winthrop Saturday. The Buccaneers' other victory this season came in a 9-1 decision over Columbia College.
Danika Birch leads the Buccaneer attack with three goals and seven points while also owning two game-winning goals. Jillian Brown and Nina Meyer have each scored twice, while Campbell Taylor has also contributed two goals and leads CSU with 18 shots. Katie Hoffman has been Charleston Southern's primary distributor with a team-high four assists.
Wednesday marks Charleston Southern's Big South home opener after beginning conference competition on the road at Winthrop.
SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday will mark the 16th all-time meeting between USC Upstate and Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers hold a narrow 8-7 advantage in the series, but the Spartans have won each of the last two meetings.
Upstate earned a 2-1 victory in Spartanburg last season after also claiming a 3-2 decision over CSU in 2024. The Spartans are 2-4 all-time when facing Charleston Southern in Charleston, with their most recent road victory in the series coming in 2021, a 1-0 overtime win. Over the last 10 meetings, Upstate owns a 6-4 advantage.
Following Wednesday's match, USC Upstate remains on the road as the Spartans travel to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood Saturday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.
