Women's Soccer Heads to Farmville to Take On Longwood

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer continues Big South Conference play Saturday afternoon as the Spartans travel to Farmville, Va., for a matchup with Longwood. Kickoff from the Longwood Athletics Complex is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Upstate enters the weekend with a 5-2-3 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Big South play following Wednesday's 2-1 road victory over Charleston Southern. The Spartans have now earned a result in seven of their last eight completed matches and are 3-2-2 away from home this season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans opened their completed portion of the Big South schedule with a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless opening half, Danielle Trovato broke through in the 60th minute off an assist from Cansu Kara. Charleston Southern equalized from the penalty spot in the 74th minute, but Upstate answered in the 82nd minute as Katelyn Economopoulos found Lily MacCausland for the eventual game-winning goal.
Upstate finished the match with a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Hannah Wilt played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
UPSTATE NOTES
The Spartans have produced 19 goals through their 10 completed matches this season while allowing 11. Seven different players have scored for Upstate, giving the Spartans multiple options throughout the attacking third.
Liana Bryant continues to headline the Upstate attack with six goals and has already recorded three game-winning goals this season. Freshman Jasmyn Mitchner has also been a key part of the Spartan offense with four goals and three assists through the opening portion of the campaign.
MacCausland and Trovato each enter Saturday following their second goals of the season against Charleston Southern. MacCausland's strike marked her first game-winning goal of the year, while Kara and Economopoulos each added an assist in the victory.
Saturday marks Upstate's second straight Big South road contest. The Spartans have already earned road victories over Wofford, Queens and Charleston Southern this season.
SCOUTING LONGWOOD
Longwood enters Saturday with a 3-5-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in Big South play. The Lancers opened conference action Sept. 19 with a 2-1 home loss to High Point. McKenna Vogel scored Longwood's lone goal in the 32nd minute before the Panthers scored the eventual game-winner in the 75th.
Vogel and Madison Fitzpatrick lead the Lancers with two goals apiece, with Vogel owning a team-high five points. Peyton Curney, Bailey Altizer, Addie Russell and Meghan Piazza have also found the back of the net this season. Reese Coggeshall leads Longwood with two assists.
Through 10 matches, Longwood has scored eight goals while allowing 12. The Lancers average 10.5 shots per match and have placed 42 of their 105 attempts on goal.
Longwood is led by head coach Todd Dyer, who is in his 33rd season leading the program. Dyer has been the only head coach in Longwood women's soccer history and entered the conference portion of the season with more than 300 career victories.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday renews a series that has been tightly contested between the Spartans and Lancers. Upstate's opponent-history records show a 4-4-2 mark against Longwood since 2018.
The Spartans have had the better of the recent meetings. Upstate earned a 2-1 home victory in 2024 before posting a 2-0 win over Longwood during the 2025 regular season. The two teams met again in the 2025 Big South Championship semifinals, playing to a 1-1 draw before the Spartans advanced to the championship match with a 6-5 victory in penalty kicks.
Saturday will be Upstate's first trip to Farmville since 2023.
Following Saturday's match, the Spartans return to County University Soccer Stadium to host Presbyterian Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
