FARMVILLE, Va. – USC Upstate men's soccer battled throughout Saturday evening's Big South matchup but couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 2-0 to Longwood at the Longwood Athletics Complex. The loss moved the Spartans to 3-7-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play, while Longwood improved to 6-3-0 and 1-1-0.

Longwood struck first in the eighth minute, as Vicent Martinez finished a chance off an assist from Brando Bedolla to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.

Despite conceding early, Upstate responded by creating a number of opportunities throughout the opening half. Tolu Fabamifobee put the Spartans' first shot on target in the 24th minute, forcing a save from Longwood goalkeeper Nicolas Pucci. Oscar Kelly followed with two shots on goal late in the half before David Palade tested Pucci in the 40th minute.

The Spartans continued to push forward, generating six corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes and seven total shots. However, Upstate was forced to play a man down after Bennett Leitner was shown a red card in the 43rd minute.

Even down a player, Upstate continued to attack after halftime. Palade produced the first opportunity of the second half less than two minutes after the restart, while Henry Burt added another attempt shortly afterward.

Longwood added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Levon Saribekyan found the back of the net off assists from Bedolla and Steven Rivas, extending the Lancers' lead to 2-0. Martinez and Saribekyan accounted for Longwood's two goals on the night, while Bedolla assisted on both.

Fabamifobee gave Upstate another late opportunity in the 85th minute, putting an attempt on frame that was stopped by Pucci.

Upstate finished the match with 10 shots, placing five on goal, while Longwood recorded 16 attempts and six shots on target. The Spartans also held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Fabamifobee led Upstate with three shots, including two on goal, while Kelly recorded two shots with both on target. Palade added two attempts and one shot on goal.

In goal, Jarrett Wuerslin played all 90 minutes for the Spartans and made four saves against Longwood's six shots on target.
