Upstate Falls 1-0 at Florida Gulf Coast

FT. MYERS, Fla. - USC Upstate played tough and had several chances, including a late chance that went just wide, but just could not get a goal as the Spartans fell once again on the road in a 1-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Soccer Complex in an Atlantic Sun Conference match Sunday afternoon.
Upstate falls to 3-13-0 this season, 1-9-0 in the A-Sun, while Florida Gulf Coast improves its record to 11-6-0, 7-3-0 in the A-Sun.
Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Daughtry, making her third start of the season, kept Upstate in the game in the first half by making three key saves. The Eagles had a great chance to score in the 21st minute when Florida Gulf Coast midfielder Amber McCall unleashed a shot that hit the post and the game remained scoreless.
Upstate has several opportunities in the first half as well, but Eagle goalkeeper Kirsi Keenan was up to the task and made two saves.
The game remained deadlocked in the second half until the 67th minute when Florida Gulf Coast midfielder Kelly Sheriff took a free kick on the right side and found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans tried to make a rally late in the contest to tie the game, but freshman forward Alyssa Roegner's shot in the 88th minute went just wide of the net and time ran out soon after.
The Eagles outshot Upstate 17-4 and held them to just one shot in the second half. Daughtry tied a career high with seven saves to lead the Spartans and freshman forward Charlise Cunningham finished with two shots.
Keenan picked up the win in goal for Florida Gulf Coast and finished with two saves.
Upstate will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 31, against Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m.
