DeLAND, Fla. - The USC Upstate women's golf team tied a single-round school record 307 in the second round of the Hatter Fall Classic Monday afternoon and is in seventh place heading into Tuesday's final round.
"Honesly, the team absolutely accepted the challenge at playing better golf and trying to beat their school record," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "They all went out and played hard. We played ourselves back into contention for a strong finish."
Upstate opened the tournament with a 326 and shaved 19 strokes to shoot the 307 in the second round. The 307 ties the single-round school record shot at the Anderson Invitational last year, helping Upstate take the team title at the event.
The Spartans have a 36-hole total of 633 at the Hatter Fall Classic. While Stetson leads the tournament with a 607 total, Upstate is just 12 strokes back of third place. Florida Southern is second with a 616 total and is followed by Florida Gulf Coast (621), Florida Atlantic (622), Jacksonville (628), Bethune-Cookman (629), Upstate (633), Daytona Beach CC (648) and Stetson "B" in the nine-team tournament.
Richia Wedzik, Julie Miller and Richelle Wedzik led the way for Upstate Monday. Richia Wedzik and Miller are tied for 15th after turning in 36-hole totals of 156. Richelle Wedzik is tied for 28th with a 161 total. Audrey Church is 39th with a 165 total, while Johanna Ebenhag is tied for 40th with a 166 effort.
Four of the five Spartans lowered their scores from the first to the second round. Miller opened with an 82 in the first round, but rallied in the second by lowering her score by eight strokes to shoot a 74. Richia Wedzik lowered her score by four strokes in the second round and turned in a 76 in the second round. Richelle Wedzik improved her score by 11 strokes in the second round, finishing with a 75.
"All three players were just great in the second round," said Lawton. "Julie played a spectacular round in the second round today. Richia had three birdies on the front nine of the second round and Richelle was equally strong."
Florida Atlantic's P. Phol-uayporn leads the tournament with a 2-under-par 142 total.
