Spartanburg, S.C. - Crossley Simmons scored the game-winning goal and Alexis Hermosa saved the day with a sliding save of a probable Upstate goal as Stetson took a 2-1 victory over the Spartans in A-Sun women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at County university Soccer Stadium.
Stetson improved to 7-8-2 overall and 5-4-0 with 15 points in the A-Sun. Upstate fell to 3-14-0 overall and 1-9-0 with three points in the league. The 2-1 loss was the ninth one-goal loss the Spartans have suffered this season.
Upstate began the scoring midway through first half when Caitlin Robison scored from 25 yards out in the 16th minute. Alyssa Roegner played a pass to Robinson on the right center of the field. With the ball bouncing nearly at Robinson's thigh, the freshman from Anderson, S.C., jumped and took the shot in the air, lifting the ball over Stetson keeper Andrea Garavaglia and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Upstate lead.
Stetson tied the game in the 22nd minute when the Hatters scored on a rebounded shot. After Elise Ketcham stole the ball as Upstate attempted to clear the ball from its box, she took a shot which headed toward the top of the goal. Samantha Spradley got a piece of it before it could go into the goal to keep the Hatters off the scoreboard. However, the ball bounced off of the crossbar and back into the box where Katie Bitetto put the shot away into the open goal to tie the game at 1-1.
The first half was physical with the teams combining for 15 fouls. Stetson and Upstate were both active offensively and were able to place a few solid scoring opportunities together. Stetson outshot Upstate by two shots, 7-5.
Stetson nearly broke the tie in the 62nd minute when Tessa Gavilsky's shot was saved by a diving Spradley. However, on the ensuing corner kick, Gavilsky gained control of the ball after several members of both teams battled for the ball. She fed Simmons who put the shot away for a 2-1 lead.
Hermosa saved the day for Stetson in the 88th minute when Upstate drew Stetson's Garavaglia off her line on the right side. The Spartans played a cross to the left and Leigh Ward took the shot. However, Hermosa was there to make a sliding save before the ball could go into the goal to preserve the Hatter 2-1 lead.
Stetson outshot Upstate 17-7 for the game and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Garavaglia made three saves to record the win in goal for the Hatters. Spradley made eight saves in an impressive performance in goal for Upstate.
