Upstate Track Nets Several Top Performances at Furman Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate men's and women's track and field teams continued to put solid performances together during the outdoor season this past Saturday competing in the Furman Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.
It was a day of firsts for two Upstate women's track sprinters as freshman LaTerrica Blocker won the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 13.60 and freshman Kiah White took the top spot in the women's 400 meter dash at 1:01.69.
Freshman distance runner Emily Tangwar continued her great season with a win in the women's 1500 meters at a time of 4:53.16 and also finished third in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:20.92.
Other finishes for the women included freshman Sheliah Williams taking third place in the women's 200 meter dash (27.51), junior Kelly Westfield finishing second in the high jump (5-00.00) and freshman Melissa Billups taking second place in the women's long jump (14-01.00). Both the Upstate 400 meter relay and 1600 meter relay teams each finished second.
On the men's side, freshman Perrish Goggins came away with another great, all-around performance that included a win in the men's long jump with a jump of 21-10.50 beating out junior teammate Marc Wartenberger, who was second at 20-00.50. Goggins was also second in the men's high jump at 6-06.00 and third in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of 11.32. Wartenberger also finished in second place in the men's discus throw with a throw of 112-08.00
Freshman James Miles finished in the top five in two events with second place in the men's shot put with a throw of 45-00.50 and fourth place in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 121-00.00.
Freshman Dustin Ledford and senior Thomas Smith each finished in the top five in the men's javelin throw as Ledford was fourth with a throw of 132-04.00 and Smith was fifth with a throw of 132-03.00.
USC Upstate will travel to Western Carolina University on Friday for the Catamount Classic.
