Upstate Track Fields Steady Performances at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - With the season winding down, the USC Upstate men's and women's track and field teams continue to strive for improvement in their first season which was the case Friday afternoon and evening at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina University.
Upstate freshman athlete Perrish Goggins, coming off of being named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, kept the momentum going by taking the men's high jump with a jump of 6-06.00 (1.98 m). It was Goggins second event win in as many meets and his eighth top-five finish of the season and his teammates, junior Marc Wartenberger and freshman Joseph Jiles, finished tied for third with a jump of 6-00.00 (1.83 m)
Freshman thrower James Miles gave the Spartans a boost with quality performances in three events. Miles finished fourth in the men's shot put (44-11.75, 13.71 m), fifth in the men's discus (117-00, 35.66 m) and fifth in the men's hammer throw (111-01, 33.85 m).
On the women's side, freshman jumper Melissa Billups came up with her first career event win in the women's triple jump, with a final mark of 33-04.75 (10.18 m) and was fourth in the women's long jump with a jump of 15-06.75 (4.74 m).
Freshman thrower Dee Dee Allen came away with two top-five finishes on the day with a third place showing in the women's javelin (110-02, 33.59 m) and fifth place in the women's shot put. Sophomore Stacie Sewell came in fifth in the women's discus with a throw of 100-08 (30.68 m).
After getting her first event win last week, freshman sprinter Kiah White was third in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.17. Freshman Kathryn Neely came in fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.88.
The Upstate women's 1600 meter relay team also got its first win of the season coming in with a time of 4:16.39.
Several Upstate athletes will be competing next at the prestigious Penn Relays April 24-26 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
