Spartanburg, S.C. - Sandy Halkett has been named the assistant women's golf coach at USC Upstate, announced Spartan head coach Todd Lawton Tuesday. She will assist in all phases of the women's golf program with an emphasis on skill development.
"The addition of Sandy Halkett is not only exciting because of her personal experience as a golfer and as a golf professional, but also because of her ties to the Upstate community," said Lawton. "I know our players will benefit from her expertise, as will I as a coach."
Halkett comes to Upstate with tremendous credentials as a teaching professional. She has been a teaching pro for 12 years and is currently an LPGA Teaching Professional at the Eagle Zone Golf Center in Greenville where she provides insight and technique into the game of golf. Prior to her position at Eagle Zone, she was the head golf professional at The Cliffs of Glassy and Millstone Golf Village. She is a class "A" member of the LPGA T&CP and apprentice in the PGA program. In addition, she serves as the golf coach for the Special Olympics and works with "Adaptive Golf' which is a teaching program designed for physically challenged individuals. She also provides teaching techniques on Fox Carolina WHNS-21.
"I look forward to taking my teaching skills to the next level and moving from an individual golf instructor to a collegiate golf coach," said Halkett. "I am excited about working with the women's team and can't wait to get out on the course and begin my collegiate career."
Halkett was a standout student-athlete, having spent four years as a member of the Clemson University women's soccer club team from 1988-91 prior to the university establishing its varsity program in 1994. She graduated from Clemson in 1992 with a bachelor of science degree in Business Management. It was at Clemson where she was introduced to the game of golf and the sport became a passion for her.
Halkett is a native of Greenville and attended Eastside High School where she played basketball, soccer and tennis. She and her husband Scott, a former standout soccer player at Upstate and current member of the University's Athletics Hall of Fame, have two sons, Luke and Gabriel; and a daughter, Campbell.
