SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Since their 2-1 win against Charleston Southern to begin the 2008 season, the Spartans have yet to score a goal. They look to rebound this week as they host The Citadel on Friday night and Furman on Monday night at County University Soccer Stadium.
History against opponents: The Spartans are 0-1 all time against The Citadel. Last year, they lost 3-2 to the Bulldogs in Charleston, S.C. The Bulldogs are 1-3-1 this season and are led by sophomore Jessa Scott and freshman Amy Loughran.
The Spartans have played against Furman only once in their history as well, compiling a 0-1 record. The Paladins outscored the Spartans, 4-1, last year in the team's first and only matchup. Furman is 4-2-1 so far this season, good for second-place in the Southern Conference.
The Spartans hosted the Carolinas Border Classic tournament on Friday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 14. They finished in fourth-place among Elon, Winthrop and Gardner-Webb. Midfielders Jordan Brown and Carmen Osorio were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Brown and Osorio Named to All-Tournament Team
The Spartans didn't finish the Carolinas Border Classic tournament in the fashion they had hoped last weekend, but they did nominate two players to the All-Tournament Team. Freshman Jordan Brown and junior Carmen Osorio received honors for their consistent play, hustle and effort in weekend play against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb. The captain and freshman have made a major impact on the competitive front and look to continue to succeed for the Spartans.
Reyes Gives Praise Despite Recent Struggles
Though the Spartan women have yet to earn their second win, Reyes remains optimistic about the team's future. "I'm very proud of what we're putting on the field and we're not allowing anyone to come and walk over us," Reyes said. "We're gaining respect from our opponents. We're digging deep, fighting hard and playing well. As a coach, you can't ask for anything more, aside from a win. It's great to see a team this young want to win so badly."
Upcoming Conference Games
The Upstate women's soccer team will open their A-Sun schedule by traveling to Jacksonville, Fla for two games the last weekend of September. The team will play North Florida on Friday night, Sept. 26, and Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 28. The Spartans will then host five conference opponents at home, including Belmont, Lipscomb, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Spartans Lose Consecutive Games 1-0
After their opening win against Charleston Southern, the Spartan women have dropped four consecutive 1-0 games, all to non-conference foes. The Spartan offense has been quiet as opponents have outshot the Upstate women, 103-32.
Daughtry Stands Solid in Net
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Daughtry has played with veteran experience thus far into the season. She combined for 40 saves in her team's first five games, playing all 450 minutes. She had 13 saves in the Spartans 1-0 loss to High Point in August, which is the second- highest total in the Upstate record book. Diana Wabnitz set the record with 14 saves in 2006 against both Carson-Newman and Armstrong Atlantic. A year later, Samantha Spradley tied the record with 14 stops against Charleston Southern.
Reyes There From the Start
Not many coaches can say they were there when a women's soccer program was started and when it made its transition to Division I. USC Upstate head coach Kendall Reyes is the only women's soccer head coach in school history, arriving along with the program in 2000. Reyes has compiled a 66-69-13 record in eight seasons including a Peach Belt Conference regular season championship in 2001 and three seasons of 12 wins or more (2001, 2003, 2004). He was also named Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 2001. In March 2007, Reyes was appointed to the position of State Technical Coordinator for Coaching Education by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). He is the first and only person of color to hold the position in the organization. In addition, he was also appointed as an NSCAA National Staff Instructor in the summer of 2007.
