Spartanburg, S.C. - In celebrating it's 30th year of operation, the Atlantic Sun Conference is releasing its top 30 moments in league history this week through it's "A-Sun 30 Shining Moments" releases. Upsstate is featured on the listing at No. 23 after having a widely successful first season in the A-Sun.
In particular, the A-Sun recognized Upstate's dominance with five conference championships in its first season in the league and NCAA Division I. There were three reasons the Spartans made the list at No. 23 - Emily Tangwar, the women's tennis team and the softball team.
Tangwar won three conference championships at the 2008 A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships, becoming the school's first conference champion in any sport. She was named the league's Performer of the Year at the meet and also took down A-Sun Freshman of the Year honors. Tangwar was also named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year in cross country after finishing second at the 2007 A-Sun Cross Country Championships.
The women's tennis team was simply dominant in its first season in the A-Sun, rolling through the season and winning the championship with a perfect 11-0 record. The Spartans finished the season with a 17-3 overall record. Anna Novo was named the A-Sun Player of the Year and was joined on the all-conference team by Susana Hernandez. Emilia Milovanovic was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team.
The softball team closed out the A-Sun season by winning 11 of its last 12 games, including sweeps of Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson, Jacksonville, North Florida and Mercer, to come from behind and win a share of the regular season conference championship. Morgan Childers was named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year, marking the first time in league history a player has earned both awards in the same season. The Spartans finished the year with 34 wins and placed Childers, Heidi Gibbs and Lauren Quevedo on the all-conference team, while Childers, Quevedo, Courtney Feldon and Kim Brasil were named to the all-freshman team.
The A-Sun will reveal its "30 Shining Moments" in a series of releases this week.
