
Sanders Notches Ninth Double-Double

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill/Sullivan) posted her ninth double-double of the season, posting 11 assists and 10 digs, but it wasn't enough to get the USC Upstate volleyball team past second-place Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon in the Hodge Center, as the Dolphins hit .357 as a team en route to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-16) win in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Junior Erin Jacobsen (Virginia, Minn./Iowa Lakes C.C.) added a team-high seven kills and three blocks for the Spartans (6-18 overall, 3-11 A-Sun) and sophomore Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) also added three kills. Junior Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added 10 digs and senior Morgan Bucciferro (Joliet, Ill./Minooka Community) added six assists, six digs and two blocks.
The Dolphins (16-5 overall, 12-2 A-Sun) took an 11-4 lead in the first set after a kill by Brooke Singleton and the Spartans came as close as four points at 13-9 after a block by Jacobsen and junior Katie Downey (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West), but the Dolphins scored 12 of the next 18 points to take the set 25-15.
In the second set, Upstate fell behing 18-11 but closed the gap to three points at 19-16 after kills by freshmen Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo./Weld Central) and Paige Weiland (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School). Howeve, the Dolphins took control thanks to Brooke Singleton, who offered up six straight Dolphin points on kills to close the 25-18 Jacksonville win.
Upstate took a 5-4 lead in the third set after a kill by sophomore Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C./Ridge View) and the teams battled to a tie at 10, but Brooke Singleton served for five points and Brittany Lehman added five more, giving Jacksonville a 21-12 lead en route to the 25-16 win.
Kathryn Kane and Singleton each posted 17 kills to lead the Dolphins, as Singleton added 13 digs. Hannah Munneke posted 40 assists and 14 digs and Shelley Walroth added 13 digs and eight assists from the libero position. Lehman added five aces and two blocks and Alliya Drzewiecki notched 11 kills.
The Spartans will head back to the road next weekend, heading for Kennesaw State for a 7 p.m. A-Sun match on Saturday before traveling to Mercer on Saturday for a 3 p.m. showdown.
