MACON, Ga. - Junior Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) posted a match-high 12 digs, but a .305 hitting effort by Mercer was enough to lift it to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-11) win over the USC Upstate volleyball team on Saturday afternoon in the University Center in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Two kills by Erica Vrvilo helped the Bears (8-17 overall, 6-11 A-Sun) take a 9-4 in the first set and the Bears never let Upstate (7-19 overall, 3-13 A-Sun) back within four points en route to the 25-13 win. Upstate fell behind 10-5 in the second set, but stormed back into the set with two kills from sophomore Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and a pair of Mercer attack errors tying the set at 15. However, the Spartans could not take a lead and after a kill from sophomore Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C./Ridge View) tied the set at 19, the Bears scored six straight points, five off the serve of Charlotte Harris to take the set 25-19. In the third set, the Bears ended the set on a 17-7 run to close out the match with a 25-11 win.
Queen led the Spartans with six kills while Thomas and junior Katie Downey (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) each posted five kills and two blocks. Freshman Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) added 11 assists and six digs.
Amiee Frutchey led the Bears with 11 kills and seven digs. Libby Hansch added six kills and five blocks and Chelsea Gebben posted 20 assists and five digs. Charlotte Harris posted a team-high 11 digs and Krista Hurley posted eight kills, four digs and four blocks.
The Spartans return to the Hodge Center for their final home matches of the year next weekend, as A-Sun foes Lipscomb and Belmont come to town. The Spartans will face Belmont on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing league-leading Lipsomb on Senior Day, Saturday at 3 p.m.
