DeLand, Fla. - Three Spartans fired rounds in the 70's in the second round of the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Invitational Monday afternoon at Victoria Hills Golf Club to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team to a team score of 303 and into sixth place heading into the final round on Tuesday.
Upstate, playing 36 holes on Monday, turned in a 333 in the first round, but rallied in the second to cut 26 strokes off its score to post the 307 in the second. The 307 marks the lowest round of the year for the Spartans.
"The second round was awesome," said Upstate assistant coach Sandy Halkett. "We finally showed what we can do. All of the players are capable of shooting scores in the 70's. That's what they have to shoot at home in qualifying just to get in these tournaments. They are all capable of doing this. It was just nice to see them do that on the stage in a tournament. I would be really pleased if we could turn in another round Tuesday like we did in the second round today. That's what our goal is, to shoot a similar round to prove that we are capable of doing that two rounds in a row."
Upstate sits comfortably in sixth place in the seven-team tournament, leading A-Sun foe Lipscomb by 45 strokes. Daytona State is first heading into the final round, carding rounds of 311 and 293 to post a 36-hole total of 604. Stetson, the host of the tournament, is second at 611 and is followed by Florida Southern (613), Florida Atlantic (616), Bethune-Cookman (618), Upstate (640) and Lipscomb (685).
Jennifer Judge was once again strong for Upstate, turning in rounds of 79 and 76 to lead the Spartans. She is tied for 13th with a 36-hole total of 155. Cheryl Lo is in position to earn a top 20 finish and is 20th after turning in rounds of 85 and even-par 72, cutting 13 strokes off of her score from the first round.
"Cheryl hit the exact same number of fairways and greens in regulation in both rounds," said Halkett. "She had 39 putts the first round and 27 in the second round, a difference of 12 strokes. The difference in her two scores was her putting."
Johanna Ebenhag also had a strong second round, posting a 77 to go with an 83 in the first round. She stands 25th. Natalie Buch shot an 86-82 for a 168 total and is in 34th position, while Marissa Clontz is 40th with a 191 total heading into the final round.
Stetson's Alex Buelow opened with rounds of 72 and 74 to tie Bethune-Cookman's Emma Taylor for the individual lead at 146. They lead Florida Southern's Silvie Dittertova by three strokes.
