SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Before enjoying a Thanksgiving feast, 43 competitors competed in the third-annual Gobble Your Giblets 5K on Thursday morning. The event began in 2007 to not only assist with fundraising for USC Upstate's cross country and track and field programs, but help promote a healthy lifestyle in the Upstate community.
The 2009 men's winner was Craig Simpkins who finished with a time of 16:51.89. For the women, Carey Phillips was the winner after posting a time of 18:20.23.
Three members of the Upstate athletic department competed in the event as well as athletic faculty representative Jim Griffis. The first athletic department member to cross the finish line was Director of Facilities Brandon McKillop. McKillop posted an event time of 23:32.35, earning him a 14th-place finish. Finishing right behind McKillop was Griffis, who posted a time of 23:48.53.
Assistant Spartan baseball coach Russell Triplett finished 26th with a time of 28:05.40. The final athletic staff member to cross the finish line was assistant softball coach Ciria Ochoa. Ochoa finished 27th with a time of 28:28.64.
